Win32/Gataka: a banking Trojan ready to take off ...

We have been following the development of the Win32/Gataka banking Trojan for several months and can now share some details of its operation which includes facilitating fraudulent bank transfers. This first post will highlight some of its key features, while the second will detail several interesting, more technical aspects of this malware. This banking Trojan was first publicly discussed in 2011 by S21Security (http://securityblog.s21sec.com/2011/02/tatanga-new-banking-trojan-with-mitb.html) but has received surprisingly little?attention since then.

Win32/Gataka has a similar architecture to SpyEye in that several plugins can be downloaded to add more functionality. It is developed in C++ and is overly verbose in both the debug strings in its binaries and the amount of logging information that is sent back to the C&C.

Installation

When the malware is run, it first injects itself into Explorer.exe and then proceeds to its installation. It injects all running processes and hooks the following APIs to monitor process spawning:

• CreateProcess
• CreateProcessAsUser

Before deleting the original dropper, it will first copy it to a file in the Application Data folder following a predefined random behavior. For persistence, it adds a value to the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] registry key, pointing to the executable that was placed in the Application Data folder.

The malware then proceeds to encrypt the original executable using a XOR key and stores it in the Application Data folder. The path to this encrypted file is kept in the following registry key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartPage\ReserveProgram]. This registry key value is also XOR encrypted.

Once the installation is completed, it will try to contact its command-and-control (C&C) server. This is done by launching iexplore.exe, injecting it with malicious code and then sending encrypted POST requests.

Architecture

Win32/Gataka?s functionality can be greatly increased through the use of plugins. In fact, when only the main component is present, there is not much functionality available to the bot-master. All plugins are downloaded from the C&C server and have a unique ID and a version number. When communicating with the C&C, the client provides a list containing all its installed plugins and their versions. The server can then send updated or new plugins to the Trojan. In one of Win32/Gataka?s campaigns that we followed, we observed updates to the main component every 2-3 days while the plugins did not evolve significantly. These updates seemed to be mostly for evading detection by anti-malware software.

We followed four distinct Win32/Gataka campaigns and collected all of their plugins. The table below highlights some of the information captured on these plugins. It is interesting to note that most campaigns we studied contained all of the plugins listed below. The plugin names listed in the table were found in their respective DLL export tables.

Once downloaded, the plugins are kept XOR-encrypted and compressed in the temporary folder, as depicted in the next figure.

Campaigns

Four different campaigns were tracked in an effort to study the different ways in which Win32/Gataka is used to steal information from unsuspecting victims. All of these campaigns share the same network protocol. They make POST requests to a hacked webpage which likely acts as a proxy and redirects the requests to the true C&C. The four campaigns use distinct hacked servers. The list for each campaign varies between three and ten URLs each and is periodically updated.

While investigating these proxy sites for one campaign, we found statistics on the number of visitors for one of the C&C proxies. The interesting part is that this site has a very low number of visitors, so it makes it possible to actually make an educated guess on this botnet infected population size. The change happened on April 19 and it is obvious from the figure below that the main contribution to the number of visits come from infected hosts.

Visits per Day (April 2012)

Using the statistics gathered on this site, we can estimate that this particular botnet?s size is relatively small. The total number of visits to this URL between April 19 and 22 is 33,197. Taking into consideration that one visit does not necessarily mean unique user, but that at this point there were four different active C&C URLs, we can infer that the size of this botnet is somewhere between 20,000 and 40,000 infected hosts.

It is also interesting to look at the origin of the requests. The following chart provides a strong indication that most of the infected users for this campaign live in Germany.

April 2012 ? Country Usage

Targets

We witnessed three types of download from the server: main component, plugins and HTTP injection configuration. The latter is quite interesting as it provides information on the targets of each campaign. Three out of four campaigns we followed had these configuration files.

German Bank

The first campaign targeted users of a German bank and was trying to convince them to enter a transaction authorization number (TAN) to perform a fraudulent transfer by stating that it was a test transfer. This behavior has been reported on previously by Trusteer (http://www.trusteer.com/blog/tatanga-trojan-bypasses-mobile-security-steal-money-online-banking-users-germany ). The following figures present an excerpt of the HTML text (including original typos) found in the injection configuration file, along with a translation.

The second campaign targeted Dutch banks. The scheme was somewhat similar to the one targeting German users, except that in this case, the user is tricked into inputting a TAN by stating that it is a necessary calibration procedure. The third campaign, which is configured to use HTTP injection, is trying to obtain ?accounts on a major US newspaper?s web site by performing brute-force guesses of usernames and their passwords. If this process is successful, the account information could possibly then be used to harvest private information or access paid content. The bot is directed to the newspaper account page and username/password pairs are entered randomly. Below is a screen capture of the simple JavaScript code used for this purpose.

This is a rather weird usage of the HTTP injection capabilities and one that might produce low return on investment, but it certainly highlights the capabilities of the malware and the creativity of its bot master or of anyone who might be renting the botnet from the bot master.

Win32/Gataka might not be as widely deployed by bot masters as SpyEye or Zeus, but it can achieve similar goals. Will its modular and stable architecture attract more cyber thieves in the future? Egypt's Islamist president begins building government

CAIRO (Reuters) - Mohamed Morsy of the Muslim Brotherhood sets about building a civilian administration for Egypt on Monday that can heal a divisive history of oppression and coax a mistrustful army into relaxing its grip on power.

Morsy, an obscure party official before being catapulted to prominence by the disqualification of the movement's preferred candidate, has little choice but to compromise, and sources in the Brotherhood said a package of agreements, already discussed with senior generals last week, could soon be announced.

At daggers drawn for most of Egypt's modern history, the Brotherhood, an international model for many Islamist parties, and the army were drawn into a wary symbiosis once the military council pushed out Mubarak to appease the protesters and found in its long-banned enemy the most organized political force.

The Brotherhood, conscious of playing a long game, was ready to play its part in a transition. But cooperation frayed when the Islamists made a push for more control. They secured the lion's share in a parliament elected in January and, with the influence that offered over drafting a constitution, plus the presidency, would have been very much in the driving seat.

That was clearly too much for Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi and his Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. With the help of a Mubarak-era judiciary, SCAF dissolved parliament on the eve of the presidential election and then gave itself the legislative power, adding also a potential role in forming a panel to write the constitution. It also revived some powers for martial law.

Critics at home and in the West called it a "soft coup."

NEGOTIATIONS

Senior Brotherhood officials say they have been negotiating in the past week to change some of that. Though both sides deny that any deal was struck over the result of the presidential vote itself, Morsy's election now sets a key reference point around which a power-sharing compromise can be built while the process of constructing a constitutional democracy goes on.

"President Morsy and his team have been in talks with the military council to bring back the democratically elected parliament and other issues," Essam Haddad, a senior Brotherhood official, told Reuters on Monday.

Brotherhood sources told Reuters they hoped the army might allow a partial recall of parliament and other concessions in return for Morsy exercising his powers to name a government and presidential administration in ways the army approves of - notably by extending appointments across the political spectrum.

Military officials have confirmed discussions in the past few days but had no immediate comment on the latest talks.

The Brotherhood has, movement officials said, approached secular reformist politician Mohamed ElBaradei, a former U.N. diplomat and Nobel peace laureate, to take a senior post, possibly as prime minister. ElBaradei has not commented.

Brotherhood officials have said they will press on with street protests to pressure the army but this, along with a number of other contentious issues including to whom and where Morsy swears his oath of office, could be settled soon.

The army wants Morsy sworn in on June 30, meeting a deadline it set itself for handing over Egypt to "civilian rule."

"Nobody should doubt there is going to be deal-making," said analyst Shadi Hamid, director of the Brookings Doha Center. "The (SCAF) still has the tanks and guns and the Brotherhood still understands that. There has to be some temporary power-sharing agreement. There has to be give and take."

RELIGIOUS IDEALS

Morsy, who evaded questions during his campaign on such fraught issues as dress codes on Egypt's profitable tourist beaches, peppered his address with religious language as he spoke from a lectern blazoned with the presidential seal - a jarring mix of sights and sounds for the vast majority Egypt's 82 million people who can remember no president but Mubarak.

He has promised a moderate "Islamic renaissance" for an Egypt mired in economic crisis. Supporters cite the example of Turkey, where the party now led by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan slowly eroded the army's resistance to pious politicians and the Muslim country has emerged as a political and economic force.

But Morsy, and the party grandees behind him, are aware that without cooperation from both the army, and the wider "deep state" of business and institutional vested interests built up under military rule, the Brotherhood risks accepting a poisoned chalice, enjoying the outward trappings of power but taking all the blame when life does not improve as fast as people hope.

Describing the election as "a true example of democracy to the world" a military council source said the pressure was on Morsy: "The onus now is on the new president to unite the nation and create a true coalition of political and revolutionary forces to rebuild the country economically and politically.

"The world is now watching the new president."

WESTERN CONCERNS

Calling it a "milestone in their transition to democracy," the United States, the army's key sponsor and also long wary of the rise of political Islam, joined other Western powers in congratulating Morsy and calling on him to form a government of national unity that would respect all Egyptians' civil rights, notably those of women and the 10-percent Christian minority.

The White House said: "It is important for President-elect Morsy to take steps at this historic time to advance national unity by reaching out to all parties and constituencies in consultations about the formation of a new government."

The British and French governments echoed that sentiment.

Israel is at war with the Brotherhood's Palestinian offshoot Hamas, which celebrated Morsy's win in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he "respected" the result and expected to continue cooperation under the peace treaty.

Half of those who voted in last month's first round of the election backed neither Morsy nor Shafik and many who voted in the run-off voted negatively - either against Morsy's religious agenda or against Shafik as a symbol of military rule.

"We voted for Morsy reluctantly to prevent Shafik from getting in because if he were president, we would all be hanged," said Mohamed Abdel Latif, 28, a youth activist in the second city of Alexandria. "From today, we will oppose Morsy.

"The Brotherhood must remember that they won because of us and they shouldn't repeat the mistakes of the past."

Shafik, a former air force commander and Mubarak's last prime minister, offered his congratulations and said he was willing to serve in Morsy's administration if asked.

He had the support of many Christians, who reacted gloomily to his defeat. Ehab Aziz of the Coptic American Friendship League said they were worried they would face special taxes, as some interpretations of Islamic law suggest for non-believers.

Joe Fahim, 29, a Christian in Cairo, said he was personally uncertain but added: "For most Copts though, it's doomsday."

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) ? A spokeswoman says NATO's governing body will meet Tuesday to discuss the Syrian downing of a Turkish plane.

Oana Lungescu says the North Atlantic Council will meet in Brussels to hear Turkey's complaint. Turkish officials say the jet was on a training flight Friday when it strayed into Syrian airspace, but was in international airspace when it was shot down.

The consultations will focus on article 4 of NATO's founding Washington Treaty.

Lungescu said Sunday that under the article, an ally can request consultations "whenever, in the opinion of any of them, their territorial integrity, political independence or security is threatened."

Look For China To Buy More U.S. Companies

China is coming to town.

Like Japan in the 1980s, China will be the big Asian investor buying up pieces of America?s landscape, natural resources and companies.? It?s a good thing.

Over the weekend a U.S. Commerce Department official said during a conference in Nanjing that China investment in the U.S. was set to double.

?Although the current stock of Chinese investments in the U.S. only adds up to $6 billion, we see the potential for a significant increase in that amount,? said Steven Olson, executive director of SelectUSA, a program under the Department of Commerce aimed at attracting foreign investment.

China Daily reported Sunday from the Nanjing conference called The U.S.-China Cities Forum on Economic Cooperation and Investment. They wrote that the two countries signed investment contracts worth $3.4 billion at the forum for a total of 42 projects in 21 sectors ? including manufacturing, energy conservation and environmental protection, electronics, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. The contracts include four Chinese firms investing $70 million in the U.S., according to the Ministry of Finance.

Investment is still lopsided, with the U.S. investing more in China than Chinese companies invest in the United States.

China is the fastest growing source of foreign investment in the U.S. The country?s direct investment in the U.S. grew at an average annual rate of 53 percent from 2005 to 2010. According to the Ministry of Commerce, China was the fifth-largest investor globally in 2010, with outbound direct investment of $68.8 billion. But growth in investment in the U.S., at 44 percent, was much slower than that in Europe (101 percent) or Japan (302 percent).

President Barack Obama?s meetings in February 2012 with Xi Jinping, China?s vice president and soon-to-be leader, provide an opportunity to address this issue of China investments in the U.S.? China?s outward investment has substantial room to grow, and the United States has the potential to capture a larger share of it, noted David M. Marchick, Managing Director, Carlyle Group, in an op-ed on the Council on Foreign Relations? website.

Marchick said that China could be transformed into a large overseas investor, not just an exporter. He called for a policy framework between Washington and Beijing that would help promote additional Chinese investment into the United States, so long as particular investments do not compromise U.S. national security interests.

Given the slow pace of the economic recovery, the U.S. would benefit from Chinese direct investment. Critics argue that Chinese investment could compromise U.S. security interests and lead to job offshoring. While Chinese acquisition of certain U.S. companies in the defense or technology sectors would create national security concerns, the preponderance of potential Chinese investments in the United States would raise no such issues, Marchick wrote.

Expanded Vegas airport aiming to tap more traffic

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? With the arrival of an overnight flight from London this week, Las Vegas will mark the opening of a $2.4 billion airport terminal that officials say could help lift the southern Nevada economy from the depths of the Great Recession.

Some are crediting McCarran International Airport planners with foresight for giving a go-ahead in 2008 for a project that airport chief Randall Walker now calls crucial to serving tourists from the U.S. and Britain, plus places like Panama, South Korea, the Philippines, Amsterdam and Berlin.

"What they've done is good, solid planning," said Michael Boyd, an aviation analyst based in Evergreen, Colo. "When Air China wants to come in, AirIndia or Turkish Air, they're going to want a gate right away. This is a good move for Las Vegas. It keeps them ahead of the curve."

The airlines Boyd cited aren't among the 16 international carriers set to use McCarran's new Terminal 3. But the second overseas arrival scheduled on opening day, Wednesday, will be a new one. Copa Airlines will be making its inaugural nonstop flight from Panama City.

The first full day of operations at the new terminal will be Thursday.

The facility, dubbed T3, will spread the flow of the nearly 114,000 daily travelers passing through the airport.

Passengers using the new "E Gates" terminal will find a gleaming, sky-lit three-story structure stretching almost a half-mile from end to end. It has self-serve check-in kiosks, streamlined security, eight miles of automated baggage-handling and more than 900 video LCD flight, baggage and gate information displays.

"It will have state-of-the-art technology and capabilities," said John Hansman, director of the International Center for Air Transportation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "It also has the advantage of being designed after the security procedures and policies we have were put in place."

The facility also has free wireless Internet, plentiful places to recharge electronic devices, $5 million worth of public artwork, four replicas of Betty Willis' iconic "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign and, of course, slot machines.

"It is on budget and on time," Walker said.

It will add 14 more gates and an eight-story parking structure to an airport currently ranked by Airports Council International as eighth-busiest nationally and 23nd worldwide by passenger volume. McCarran handled 41.5 million passengers last year with 96 gates.

The new terminal will expand the airport capacity to 53 million passengers a year, and increase from 800 to 2,000 an hour the number of international travelers who can pass through an expanded U.S. Customs and Border Protection arrivals hall.

Seven of the new gates will serve international flights. Seven will host domestic carriers. Neither the gates nor baggage carousels will have the number 13 ? a concession to superstition in a city where casino luck ebbs and flows.

Opening the new terminal will allow for eventual demolition of an old international terminal with four outmoded gates and a cramped customs area. Walker said up to 10 more gates might be added there before McCarran reaches its property limit.

Nevada's housing market and economy plunged during the recession, and the state still leads the nation in unemployment, bankruptcies and foreclosures. But even as numbers dropped and the economic downturn took hold, Walker said airport administrators kept their focus on the horizon.

"The airport never wants to be an impediment to the growth of the community," Walker said, as he credited Clark County commissioners with giving the go-ahead in 2008 to float bonds for the T3 project.

"It took a lot of guts," Walker said. "But if we didn't have seven international gates this summer, we wouldn't be able to accommodate the international traffic that we're getting."

Airport cash flow will repay the debt over the next 25 years, Walker said.

Airport analyst Stephen Van Beek called the cost of the T3 project easily supportable by future airport revenues, advertising, gambling and concessions.

"The beauty is you have a lot of revenue generated not on the carriers," Van Beek said.

In separate interviews, Van Beek and Boyd said Las Vegas enjoys a unique position relative to airport expansions elsewhere, including a $1.8 billion renovation and expansion project starting at Salt Lake City International Airport.

"Las Vegas is not Omaha or New York City," Boyd said. "People go to Las Vegas for the Strip and conventions and downtown. That's different from passengers passing through Atlanta going somewhere else."

Atlanta, the world's busiest airport by passenger volume, handles more than 89 million passengers a year. But Van Beek said maybe one in three passengers stays in Atlanta, while almost all of McCarran's passengers begin or end their trip in Las Vegas.

Walker said conventioneers and tourists account for 80 percent of McCarran passenger traffic, and local residents make up another 12 percent. Just 8 percent of McCarran passengers currently use the Las Vegas airport as a connecting hub for another flight.

Van Beek noted the Las Vegas airport isn't tied to the fortunes of one large air carrier, but serves as a destination for carriers including Southwest Airlines.

"Airports like San Diego and Las Vegas, where Southwest is their leading carrier, have an advantage because their leading carrier is growing," he said.

Hansman, the MIT professor, said air travel is expected to grow nationally in years to come and that Las Vegas will need the expanded airport to compete.

"Airports are the waterfront property of aviation. You're not getting new ones, so you have to take advantage of what you've got and make it as efficient as possible," he said.
