'Amazing young man': Boy races to alert residents as fire spreads to their houses

By NBCChicago.com

Firefighters are crediting a 12-year-old boy with alerting residents of a fire that broke out in a building Saturday morning, causing an extra-alarm blaze in Chicago?s Canaryville neighborhood.

Firefighters were called around 10 a.m. to the 4400 block of South Union Avenue for reports of the fire, according to Fire Media. The fire began at one home on the block and spread to three neighboring homes, sparking fire officials to call a 3-11 alarm, Fire Media said.

See original report at NBCChicago.com

Officials said several residents of the buildings that caught fire were alerted and evacuated early in the blaze due to the efforts of a young boy who saw the flames and went through the building to alert residents.

"I just started screaming 'There's a fire,'" said Edwin Perez. "I was so, so scared."

Fire officials said no injuries were reported and credited the boy's efforts.

?This young man should be commended,? said Mark Nielsen, assistant deputy fire commissioner for the Chicago Fire Department."That?s an amazing young man.?

The fire took over an hour to put out and required 10 handlines and four master streams. At one point, an emergency evacuation of firefighters was called, but all personnel were accounted for in a roll call, Fire Media said.

Officials said the flames began on the back porch of one home on the block and spread to the neighboring 2.5-story homes, which were close in spacing.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Bulls coach can't wait to get started ? with Rose

Chicago Tribune

If there's one thing on which Tom Thibodeau, Derrick Rose and Gar Forman agree, it's that next season - and its championship potential - is the focus.

In a wide-ranging, 14-minute interview with beat reporters before the Bulls defeated the Grizzlies 81-67 in their summer-league opener, Thibodeau didn't shed much light on his relationship with Forman. Nor did he deeply address the surprising departure of lead assistant Ron Adams, which lifted the curtain on some strain between coaches and management.

"Hey, it's fine," Thibodeau said. "(Executive vice president John Paxson) and Gar are in charge of putting the roster together. I have a voice. They make the final decision. That's the way it works."

But sounding eerily similar to Forman's "unite and move forward" message in the wake of Adams' forced departure, a relaxed Thibodeau lauded the Bulls' depth and spoke with confidence of next season.

"I wish we were getting started tomorrow," he said.

And Rose, with whom Thibodeau speaks often?

"I know he's anxious to get started," Thibodeau said.

Well, there you go. Unite and move forward indeed. As usual, Rose, currently on a European promotional tour for his shoe company, will be the focus.

"What the summer has done is it has given him more time to build confidence and strength in his leg," Thibodeau said. "He looks great. He's feeling as well as he has in a long, long time. His entire body is a lot stronger. He has put a lot of work into his shooting."

Given that Thibodeau likely has his practice plan scheduled for, say, Feb. 8, he must know his preseason plan for Rose, who hasn't played since tearing his left ACL in April 2012.

"You can't be out the amount of time that he has been without going through an adjustment period when he comes back," Thibodeau said. "That will be normal. But from a physical and mental standpoint he's terrific. We feel good that we have Kirk (Hinrich) backing him up. That's a big plus.

"We're going to see what he can handle first. We're not anticipating big limitations on him. But the preseason, that's what that is there for. We'll see how those minutes unfold. Then we'll get started in the regular season. He'll be fine."

In an interview on the Bulls' website, Rose recently lauded his close relationship with Thibodeau. The coach said he planned to visit Rose in Los Angeles between this European tour and one in China scheduled for August. Rose is scheduled to return to Chicago for workouts in late September.

"He's totally selfless," Thibodeau said when asked about Rose's comments about him. "He gives you everything he has. He practices hard each day. He plays to win, plays for his teammates. He's as happy for his teammates when they do well as he is for himself. All he cares about is winning. We can't ask him to do anything more."

This is why Thibodeau isn't concerned that the fan backlash Rose received over sitting out the entire season will linger.

"Once he gets started, our fans will be behind him," he said.

Other highlights from Thibodeau:

On the Mike Dunleavy free-agent signing: "Mike has been a starter and played very well. And he has been a bench guy and played very well. I like that he can get it done in shorter minutes. He complements Derrick and Carlos (Boozer) extremely well. He moves well without the ball. He's a playmaker and an excellent team defender. We think he's a great fit."

On speculation he won't finish his four-year extension because of a rift with management: "People are going to read into things the way they want to. I'm fine. All I'm thinking about is getting ready for next season and being a championship-caliber team. That's it."

On the Bulls' title chances: "The big part is going to be health. I like the makeup of our team. We have a lot of flexibility."

Health-Care Innovators Get President Obama's Attention

Even as the White House has backed off on a few of its deadlines for administering the Affordable Care Act, the Obama Administration is staying the course on its efforts to transition paper files to electronic health records in doctor's offices.

President Barack Obama met with several chief executives of health-care technology companies, government leaders and nonprofit public-service organizations on Monday for a conversation on how technology, big data and innovation can be used to bring down the costs and improve the quality of health care in the U.S., according to a statement from the White House.

The Obama Administration says it has met and exceeded its goal to have 50 percent of doctor's offices and 80 percent of hospitals using electronic records by the end of the year.

The meeting included Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Marilyn Tavenner, and entrepreneurs ChenMed CEO Chris Chen and iTriage CEO Peter Hudson, who are considered on the forefront of technological advancement in the health-care industry.

ChenMed is a Miami Gardens, Fla.-based medical, consulting and technology company focused on improving care for seniors. Denver, Colo.-based iTriage developed a health-care application for smartphones and tablets, which helps consumers identify their symptoms, locate appropriate care and book an appointment. The iTriage application was founded by two emergency medicine physicians and has been downloaded 9.5 million times.

Obama praised the work iTriage has done in a speech Monday from the White House on ways private-sector entrepreneurs have made government bureaucratic processes more efficient. "As anyone knows, dealing with the federal government is not always high-technology, and it's not always user-friendly," Obama says. For his second term, he's asked his Cabinet to establish a management agenda that will utilize entrepreneurial innovations and technologies more aggressively than in the past.

"We're going to continue to adopt good ideas from the private sector," Obama says. "And I'm going to be asking more people around the country -- more inventors and entrepreneurs and visionaries -- to sign up to serve. We've got to have the brightest minds to help solve our biggest challenges."

De la Renta joins Clintons and pantsuit in Ark.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) ? It's not quite "Project Pantsuit," but it's not far off.

Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday honored fashion designer Oscar de la Renta, the man responsible for a teal, silk pantsuit she wore when she was sworn in as a senator.

The two shared the stage together last month in New York when Clinton, a self-professed pantsuit aficionado, presented de la Renta with the Council of Fashion Designers of America's highest honor and joked about a fictional "Project Runway" spinoff, "Project Pantsuit."

They met again Monday evening in Little Rock, where some of de la Renta's work ? including the teal pantsuit ? is on display at the William J. Clinton Presidential Center.

Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, thanked de la Renta for his work and his friendship as they feted him and his temporary exhibit called "Oscar de la Renta: American Icon," which opened in May and runs through Dec. 1.

"I was not asked to open this relatively brief ceremony because I am the most expert person on this stage in the field of high fashion," the former president said in the company of de la Renta and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour.

Wintour, meanwhile, praised de la Renta and his work with first ladies and Clinton for her work over the years, most recently as secretary of state.

"She always looked entirely appropriate wherever she was and nearly always in Oscar," Wintour said.

Wintour drew applause from the crowd when she mentioned the former first lady as a potential presidential candidate in 2016.

"It's anyone's guess what the next chapter will be for this extraordinary woman," Wintour said. "I can only hope that all of you here in Little Rock will be celebrating her come November 2016."

Clinton didn't discuss her future or poke fun at her penchant for pantsuits on Monday.

Instead, she thanked de la Renta, whom she has called a "dear friend."

"Oscar has really treated first ladies such as myself and Nancy Reagan and Laura Bush with such great support," she said. "And sometimes, as Chelsea knows, he's even dressed our daughters."

That was evidenced at the de la Renta exhibit, where Clinton's daughter's garb was displayed near her teal pantsuit.

That pantsuit, which hardly needs a placard identifying who wore it, stands near a red, cashmere outfit Laura Bush wore in 2008 and a beige ensemble Nancy Reagan donned two decades earlier.

Visitors also see reproductions of a couple of de la Renta dresses Clinton has worn over the years, but the pantsuit stands out.

The signage surrounding her pantsuit, much like her new Twitter biography, plays on the prominent pantsuits she's worn.

Clinton calls herself a "pantsuit aficionado" on Twitter. However, the wording on a placard at the exhibit ? much like the exhibit itself ? is a bit more highbrow.

"Pantsuits designed by Oscar de la Renta are perhaps Hillary Clinton's most famous sartorial statement," a sign says.

Across the exhibit, flowers bloom from a handful of the designer's evening gowns. Another array of dresses pay homage to the Dominican-born designer's time in Spain. A mannequin wearing a black-and-white polka dot mermaid dress pauses as if frozen while dancing flamenco, her arms snaking through the air.

"What I saw in Spain colored the way I have looked at clothes ever since," de la Renta says in a quote displayed on the wall.

The former first ladies' outfits don't look quite like they walked off the streets of Seville, but they're still clearly de la Renta ? a designer who has built relationships with a number of women in the White House.

"Oscar has been a dear friend to me, and many other first ladies. His designs are truly beautiful and exemplify American style," Laura Bush said in a quote near the red suit she wore five years ago for the White House Holiday Press Preview.

Even the former president lamented the fact that he's never worn one of de la Renta's dresses.

"Well, as your daughter, Dad, I'm grateful you never wore one of Oscar's dresses," Chelsea Clinton said.

Factbox: Worst recent plane disasters, in the U.S. and globally

(Reuters) - Saturday's crash of an Asiana Airlines plane, in which a Boeing 777 flying from Seoul crashed while landing at San Francisco, killed two people and sent as many as 130 to the hospital, initial reports said.

Following are some facts about Asiana's safety record, the record of the Boeing 777 and some recent fatal plane crashes in the United States and around the world.

Source: the Flight Safety Foundation, a non-profit independent organization that monitors aviation safety and runs a database. (http://aviation-safety.net/database/)

ASIANA

The South Korean airline last suffered a crash when a Boeing 747 cargo plane plunged into the sea off Jeju, South Korea, on July 28, 2011. Two pilots were killed.

Asiana's worst accident was on July 26, 1993, when 68 people were killed when a Boeing 737 crashed as it came in to land at Mokpo Airport in South Korea.

BOEING 777

The Boeing 777 is a family of long-range jets that first entered service in the mid 1990s. It has not been involved in any fatal crashes before.

WORST PLANE ACCIDENTS IN THE UNITED STATES

The worst ever plane accident in the United States, according to the Flight Safety Foundation, was on May 25, 1979, when an American Airlines DC-10 crashed soon after take-off from Chicago en route for Los Angeles. All 271 people on board were killed, and two people on the ground also died.

In the last 20 years, the worst plane accident in the United States was the crash of an American Airlines Airbus A300 near New York City on November 12, 2001. The plane, on a flight to the Dominican Republic, crashed soon after take-off from John F. Kennedy airport, killing all 260 people on board and five people on the ground.

In the last 10 years, the worst crash involving a commercial passenger plane in the United States was on February 12. 2009. Some 49 people on board and one person on the ground were killed when a Colgan Air DHC-8-400 plane crashed while preparing to land at Buffalo, New York.

The most dramatic crash in the United States in recent years was the so-called "Miracle on the Hudson," when a US Airways passenger plane, an Airbus 320, struck geese while taking off from La Guardia airport in New York City on January 15, 2009. Although the plane's engines were damaged, the pilot managed to land safely in the Hudson River. Everyone was taken safely of the plane before it sank.

The worst ever aviation disaster in the United States was not an accident - the Sept 11, 2001 attacks in which hijackers rammed planes into the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon near Washington and into the ground in rural Pennsylvania. The attacks killed everyone on board the four planes and many more on the ground, for a total of some 3,000 deaths.

WORST MAJOR PLANE ACCIDENTS IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS

Following were the most fatal accidents involving passenger jets around the world in the last five years, listed as the most recent first, according to the Flight Safety Foundation:

June 3, 2012: Dana Air crash of an MD-83 in Nigeria, killing 163 people.

July 28, 2010: Airblue crash of an Airbus A321 in Pakistan, killing 152 people.

May 22, 2010: Air India Express crash of a Boeing 737 in India, 158 people killed

July 15, 2009: Caspian Airlines crash of a Tupolev 154 in Iran, 168 people killed.

June 30, 2009: Yemenia Airways crash of an Airbus A310 in the Comoros, 152 people killed

June 1, 2009, Air France crash of an Airbus A330 in the Atlantic Ocean, 228 people killed

August 20, 2008, Spanair crash of an MD-82 in Spain, killing 154 people.

Syrian prison shelled, part of Aleppo battle

BEIRUT (AP) ? Shells smashed into a central prison in the embattled Syrian city of Aleppo, killing some prisoners, a rights group said Sunday, part of a long battle for control of the ancient city.

The explosions killed six prisoners, said the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which communicates with a network of activists on the ground. The explosives hit on Friday night, the Observatory said. It was not clear who fired the shells.

With government forces stepping up offensives, the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood called on the U.S. and Europe to send arms.

"Providing the Free Syrian Army and the revolutionary rebels with appropriate arms is more urgent now than at any time in the past," the movement wrote on social media sites. "We feel cheated and disappointed because the U.S. and Europe have backed out from arming the FSA," it said.

Last month the U.S. decided in principle to provide some weapons to rebel forces, though Western countries are concerned they might land in the hands of extremist Sunni Muslims fighting with the rebels.

The forces include an al-Qaida-linked group which has been fighting for weeks to seize control of the prison in Aleppo, besieging it. The Observatory estimated some 120 prisoners have died in the jail since April from fighting, illness and executions.

Syria's state run news agency SANA said "a number" of rebels were killed in the shelling but did not give an exact number.

Aleppo, Syria's largest city, is near the border with Turkey. Many of its ancient monuments and its marketplace, once a magnet for tourists, have been destroyed in fighting.

Rebels and government forces also clashed near the Shiite towns of Nubul and Zahra in Aleppo province, the Observatory and pro-rebel activists reported. The towns have been besieged since at least May by hard-line Sunni rebels seeking to dislodge their enemies.

The Observatory said fighting killed three regime troops, including one foreigner, code for a fighter from the Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah.

Rebels claim that Assad's forces and Hezbollah fighters are in the two towns. A hard-line Sunni brigade warned last week it would punish Shiites for harboring the forces, suggesting the towns' populations of some 40,000 Shiites could be targeted.

The fighting underscores the growing sectarian nature of the two-year uprising against Assad's regime. It began as peaceful protests but turned into an armed rebellion after a brutal government crackdown. It has since taken on regional dimensions, with Hezbollah fighters joining Assad's forces. Foreign Sunni fighters have joined predominantly Sunni Syrian rebels who are formed in bands ranging from secular to hard-line Islamists.

At home, Assad draws support largely from Syria's minorities, including fellow Alawites ? followers of an offshoot of Shiite Islam ? as well as Christians, Shiites and Sunnis who fear the hard-line rebels.

In recent weeks, Assad's forces, bolstered by Hezbollah fighters, have pushed back to seize rebel-held areas in several parts of Syria.

In the central Syrian city of Homs, Assad's forces fired mortar shells from a stronghold of buildings on the edge of the rebel-held area of Khaldiyeh, trying to flush out fighters, said two activists.

Explosions could be heard as they spoke via Skype.

The shells were exploding in the densely-built area surrounding the 13th-century mosque of Khalid Ibn al-Walid, famous for its nine domes and two minarets, said a Homs-based activist identified as Nedal. He said parts of the wall surrounding the historic complex were blown away. Other parts were damaged in previous rounds of fighting.

Khaldiyeh-based activist Abu Bilal said fighters were low on weapons. He said the international community, despite promises to arm rebels, had left them hanging in Homs.

"They have sold Homs to the enemy," he complained.

The U.N. warns the some 4,500 residents in besieged, rebel-held areas of Homs face a humanitarian catastrophe. On Friday, the divided U.N. Security Council failed to approve a statement calling on the Syrian government to allow immediate access to trapped civilians there. Russia, Syria's closest ally, demanded that the statement should also call for immediate access to the towns of Nubul and Zahra.
