Mother of GMA co-host Robin Roberts dies

NEW YORK (AP) ? Lucimarian Roberts, the mother of "Good Morning America" co-host Robin Roberts, has died a day after the anchor announced she was taking a medical leave for a bone marrow transplant.

The 88-year-old Roberts died in Gulfport, Miss., on Thursday night, Jeffrey W. Schneider, senior vice president of ABC News, said Friday.

The announcement of the death also was made on "GMA" on Friday morning.

"Robin arrived home with her sister, Sally-Ann, forging through flooded and blocked roads to be with her beloved mother in time to see her," GMA Senior Executive Tom Cibrowski said in an email to the entire news division Thursday evening.

The Mississippi area was dealing with flooding from the effects of Hurricane Isaac.

Over the years, Lucimarian Roberts made numerous appearances on "GMA."

She was a Gulf Coast icon for more than four decades. She often was the first black woman to work with organizations and state and local agencies, and she became known for her ability to get things done.

She was the first black to serve as chairman of the Mississippi State Board of Education in the 1980s.

She also had a great passion for poetry and music.

Lucimarian Roberts collaborated with her daughter on a book titled, "My Story, My Song ? Mother-Daughter Reflections on Life and Faith."

"I sing because the music of the church speaks my soul language," she wrote. "I sing because these songs are tightly woven in to the texture of who I am."

"She even recorded a CD of hymns for her family as a gift last year," said Cibrowski.

The family was gathered in Pass Christian, Miss., and planned a small private service, he said.

The death came on the same day Roberts said goodbye to her co-workers and audience before starting her medical leave. Sally-Ann, a morning anchor at WWL-TV in New Orleans, is donating the marrow to her sister.

Robin Roberts' departure had been set for Friday. But in a last-minute change of plans, she told her viewers she was leaving a day early to visit her ailing mother.

In a statement on her Facebook page, Robin Roberts said she and Sally-Ann arrived in Gulfport in time to visit with their mother before she died.

"A CD of her favorite hymns is playing in her room. So thankful for my sister, Dorothy, and the nurses who have been caring for her. I will cherish these moments I have with mom. Then focus on what is ahead of me undergoing a bone marrow transplant."

Besides her three daughters, Lucimarian Roberts is survived by a son and eight grandchildren.

Her husband, Col. Lawrence E. Roberts, died in 2004 at the age of 81. He was a member of the all-black U.S. Army Air Corps, also called the Tuskegee Airmen. He served in Vietnam, where he was awarded one of his three Legion of Merit medals.

Cibrowski said there would be a special tribute to Lucimarian Roberts on GMA. Details were being worked out.

    MOON: Movie Trailer

    MOON: Movie Trailer

It is the near future. Astronaut Sam Bell is living on the far side of the moon, completing a three-year contract with Lunar Industries to mine Earth?s primary source of energy, Helium-3. It is a lonely job, made harder by a broken satellite that allows no live communications home. Taped messages are all Sam can send and receive. Thankfully, his time on the moon is nearly over, and Sam will be reunited with his wife, Tess, and their three-year-old daughter, Eve, in only a few short weeks. Finally, he will leave the isolation of ?Sarang,? the moon base that has been his home for so long, and he will finally have someone to talk to beyond ?Gerty,? the base?s well-intentioned, but rather uncomplicated computer. Suddenly, Sam?s health starts to deteriorate. Painful headaches, hallucinations and a lack of focus lead to an almost fatal accident on a routine drive on the moon in a lunar rover. While recuperating back at the base (with no memory of how he got there), Sam meets a younger, angrier version of himself, who claims to be there to fulfill the same three year contract Sam started all those years ago. Confined with what appears to be a clone of his earlier self, and with a ?support crew? on its way to help put the base back into productive order, Sam is fighting the clock to discover what?s going on and where he fits into company plans.

Report: Ireland hospitals to send some patients home

By NBC News staff

Hospitals in Ireland will send some patients home at weekends after the country?s public health services announced a new round of deep cuts, according to a media report Friday.

Cash-strapped hospitals will have to shut some wards on weekends as part of an effort to cut $44 million in spending on staff and overtime by the end of 2012, according to the Irish Independent.

Adam Patterson / Panos for nbcnews.com

Irish voters share their views on austerity and the economy as they prepare to vote in a referendum on the European Union's new fiscal treaty.

?

'The country is on its knees': Ireland grapples with economic collapse

The cuts were announced Thursday by senior staff at the Health Service Executive.

The health service is facing cuts of $163 million across the service, reports said.?Overall, the country's health system is running a $315 million deficit,?according to the Irish Times.

Officials said the staff shortages that the cuts would cause meant that more hospitals would have to operate "five-day" wards, according to the Independent.

That meant that patients assessed as "clinically suitable" would be sent home for weekends but would return to hospitals on Mondays.

Ghost towns tell the story of Ireland's faded dream

"Every effort has been made to target areas that do not impact on direct patient or client services," the newspaper quoted Laverne McGuinness of the?Health Service Executive?as saying.

The disability organization Inclusion Ireland condemned the cuts.

Paddy Keogh, the chief executive, told the newspaper that the reductions would "push people back into their own homes."

Yale president to step down

NEW HAVEN -- Yale University President Richard C. Levin, who oversaw a big building and renovation program and an expansion in financial aid programs, announced Thursday he is stepping down at the end of the academic year after 20 years at the Ivy League school.

Levin, 65, has served longer than any other president currently in the Ivy League or the 61-member Association of American Universities. He plans to take a sabbatical and write a book.

He is credited with leading the school's largest building and renovation program since the 1930s, expanding Yale's financial aid programs and international activities, improving the university's historically difficult relationship with its unions and building partnerships with New Haven.

Yale's endowment went from $3.2 billion in 1993 when Levin was named president to $19.4 billion this year. Levin helped raise more than $7 billion during his tenure, Yale officials said.

Under Levin, the university secured long term contracts with unions. A homebuyers program started in 1994 offered financial incentives to Yale employees to buy homes in the city and more than 1,000 Yale faculty and staff have participated, Yale officials said.

Yale renovated all 12 of its residential colleges and has plans to build two more. About 70 percent of the space on campus has been partially or comprehensively renovated since 1993.

A planned joint campus with the National University of Singapore will open next year.

"Rick Levin is simply one of the world's great leaders," Yale trustee Indra Nooyi, chief executive of PepsiCo, said in a statement. "He has been transformational in envisioning how a university should be a leading citizen in its home community, and he has boldly staked out how the leading universities should become global institutions. His example has been a guide for how universities around the world can have a much greater impact."

Yale Corp., the university's governing body, will conduct a search.

Levin wrote in a message to the Yale community that he was looking forward to a sabbatical, "when at last I will have the time to complete a book of reflections on higher education and economic policy."

Levin, who was born and raised in San Francisco, met his wife Jane at Yale. "From the day Jane and I entered graduate school in 1970, Yale has been our life," Levin wrote in his message.

He was an economics professor when he was tapped to become president in 1993. His wife is a senior lecturer.

The last Yale president to serve 20 years was Arthur Twining Hadley, who took office in 1899.

Beyond Wind & Rain: Isaac Could Stir Up Oil

As Tropical Storm Isaac roars over Louisiana and elsewhere on the Gulf Coast, it threatens to disrupt a fragile environment that's still recovering from BP's Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the summer of 2010. ?

By disturbing the sediments in which the spilled oil is buried, near the beach and deeper in the water, the hurricane could release large quantities of oil, several researchers warn.

"This is another disaster on top of the hurricane that we're going to have to deal with," Garret Graves, chairman of Louisiana's Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, told the Huffington Post. "The threat is not insignificant."

So far there have been no reports of oil, but that isn't surprising considering most everybody is taking shelter or has evacuated the area, said Lt. Alyssa Johnson, operation officer at the National Response Center, a federal organization responsible for coordinating a response plan to environmental releases of oil or other hazardous materials. [Latest News on Isaac]

Storm surge

Isaac's storm surge, expected to reach heights of 6 to 12 feet (about 2 to 3.5 meters), could transport oil inland, where it could further affect marshlands and wildlife or come into contact with people, Graves told the Bloomberg news service. It also could flood areas containing contaminants such as pesticides, fertilizers and septic system bacteria and wash these back out into coastal waters or into groundwater, University of Florida researcher Andrew Zimmerman told OurAmazingPlanet in an email.

But it's unclear how much oil remains in Gulf sediments and along the shoreline ? and how much might be stirred up.

"It could be a lot or a little," said University of Florida researcher Andrew Zimmerman.

An estimated 1 million gallons of MC 252 oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill has been distributed throughout the sediment underwater, on the beach and in marshes, according to Nanciann Regalado, speaking a spokesperson at the U.S. Department of the Interior.

"After danger to humans has passed and field teams can get into the field, samples of oil that has been exposed will be taken," Regalado told OurAmazingPlanet. If chemical analysis finds that the oil was from the Deepwater Horizon, BP may be required to clean up the oil, she added.

Exactly how far below the surface sediment and oil can be disturbed by a hurricane isn't clear, but meteorologist Jeff Masters said large hurricanes can create currents capable of mobilizing whatever oil is at the bottom.?

Nick Shay, a professor of meteorology and physical oceanography at the University of Miami, told the Huffington Post this was possible. Hurricanes can "bring whatever is near the bottom up higher in the water column, and currents can then push it towards the coast," he said.

Erosion

Isaac also could worsen erosion in the area by pounding the shore with waves. According to the National Hurricane Center, Isaac is likely to cause significant erosion of 89 percent of Mississippi's beaches.

?The Deepwater Horizon disaster began with a deadly blowout on April 20, 2010, and spilled an estimated 205 million gallons of crude into the Gulf. Among other damage, the oil killed marsh grasses that prevent erosion. For 18 months afterward, marsh erosion rates doubled to 10 feet (3 meters) per year, said University of Florida researcher Brian Silliman.

Most of the grass has grown back, but how it will weather this storm is unclear. Barrier islands and coastlines could be eroded, affecting nesting areas for many kinds of wildlife, including birds and turtles.

Biggest impact

The biggest environmental impact of Isaac will be erosion causing the loss of wetlands, Masters said. A 2011 study by the United States Geological Survey found that four hurricanes in the past seven years ? Katrina, Rita, Gustav and Ike ? together destroyed about 250 square miles (650 square kilometers) of Louisiana. "I expect Isaac will destroy 50-100 square miles of wetlands," or about 130 to 260 square kilometers, Masters told OurAmazingPlanet.

A spokesman for BP said the company isn't worried about Isaac. "Consistent with the past two hurricane seasons, we do not expect any significant impact of residual MC 252 oil following Hurricane Isaac," Ray Melick told the Huffington Post.

Although plants and animals are well-adapted to storms like this, Zimmerman said, they have a lowered ability to cope when they are already stressed from human activities.

Luckily, Regalado said, bird nesting season in the area is largely finished and most wintering birds haven't arrived. However, loggerhead sea turtle nesting season is in full swing, and many nests are at risk of flooding.

start with umbrella then switch to ltd?

You can check out this website for the first timers guide.
First Timers Guide - for IT Contractors :: Contractor UK

Some agents will let you use an umbrella first and then switch to a limited. Other agents will try to force you to use their favourite payroll company (not legal actually, as long as you comply with tax, etc that's the main thing).

You are about to enter the jungle of agents placing dummy adverts to fish for your cv and references for their business development.

They can really mess you around - eg make appointments for an initial phone interview with a client and then the client or agent never calls again.

Make sure you know what the market value is for your skill. Agents may try to push your rate down and it's worse if they know you are new to the contracting world.

You can look a payroll options from say SJD Accounting. 85 a month. They have overviews and calculators on the website and it shows you the difference between a limited and self-employed scenarios. I don't know about pentalites for switching to a limited or other solution, but some umbrellas have a notice period. It can be just a couple of days. Check out some umbrella cos and ask them.

LisaContractorUmbrella on the forum has lots of posts on umbrella related topics.

Generally, if you are not going to bring in 25K in a tax year, don't go for a limited becuase of the added accounting costs.

Timesheets can sometimes be sent once a month or once a fortnight. It depends on the umbrella. Some pay every 2 weeks (may charge more for it), some pay per month.

.. check list, what happens if your end client does not pay the umbrella co or goes bust? Insurance?
Does your umbrella have liability insurance?
Don't use umbrellas with dodgy offshore schemes. Will not be compliant and you will get tax bills.

Some accountants like quarterly account sheets - they won't ask for timesheets, but use your invoices.

Read up on IR35 but that's more relevant if you have a limited one day. Not all accountants are IR35 experts and it's not their role. There are suggestions on this forum for experts who check your contract over for IR35 friendliness or unfriendliness. All your accountant needs to know at the end of the day is does your contract fall into IR35 or is it outside it.

If you are going to contract abroad, not all countries will allow you to use a UK limited in any case. You may have to go on a local payroll there.

Good luck

Relationships A-Z: Hi! | SEX - Carsons38's blog

Hey all, glad you could join me on this alphabetical tour of all things sex and relationships. Now you may be wondering, ?Why Relationships A-Z?? Well, basically because I?m in love with English, grammar, and everything in between. So naturally, I felt I should combine this blog and my love of English into one big happy family! I could absolutely talk about this love of English for ages, but we?re just going to jump right in.

A is for Anniversaries

Okay, I?m going to be honest; I?ve never really understood the whole ?Anniversary? thing. I should clarify. Celebrating your anniversary annually seems perfectly logical to me, but it?s the people who celebrate every single month of their relationship that I find interesting. Why is important that you?ve been in a relationship for six months versus seven? A relationship doesn?t evolve significantly over 30 days, at least not in my opinion. Yes, you grow and learn things together, but the relationship isn?t going to go from one end of the spectrum to the other. Why does society feel the need to acknowledge every minor event these days? Pardon my rant ? I?m done now.

B is for Breakups

Okay, first of all, I realize how odd it is to talk about anniversaries and break ups in the same post. Breakups are another thing I don?t really understand though, so I thought it was appropriate. Why do they have to be such a big deal? Yeah, it completely sucks to either break up with someone or get broken up with, but the world isn?t exactly ending. Like all girls, I have that one friend. You know the one I mean, the girl who locks herself in her room and eats chocolate frosting out of the can. How on Earth is that helping anything? Falling into a chocolate coma isn?t going to make your breakup go away. Sorry ladies. Again, pardon my rant ? I guess what I?m trying to say here is I fully believe that every girl and guy out there is strong and independent enough that they can survive on their own.

Well, that?s all I have to say for now I suppose. Keep it classy, y?all.

(AP) ? After a year of scorched-earth litigation, a jury decided Friday that Samsung ripped off the innovative technology used by Apple to create its revolutionary iPhone and iPad.

The jury ordered Samsung to pay Apple $1.05 billion in the latest skirmish of a global legal battle between the two tech giants. An appeal is expected.

Apple Inc. filed its patent infringement lawsuit in April 2011 and engaged legions of the country's highest-paid patent lawyers to demand $2.5 billion from its top smartphone competitor. Samsung Electronics Co. fired back with its own lawsuit seeking $399 million.

The verdict, however, belonged exclusively to Apple, as the jury rejected all Samsung's claims against Apple. Jurors also decided against some of Apple's claims involving the two dozen Samsung devices at issue, declining to award the full $2.5 billion Apple demanded.

However, the jury found that several Samsung products illegally used such Apple creations as the "bounce-back" feature when a user scrolls to an end image, and the ability to zoom text with a tap of a finger.

Apple lawyer plans to formally demand Samsung pull its most popular cellphones and computer tablets from the U.S. market. They also can ask the judge to triple the damages to $3 billion. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh will decide those issues along with Samsung's demand she overturn the jury's verdict in several weeks.

The outcome of the case is likely to have ripple effects in the smartphone market. After seeing Samsung's legal defeat, other device makers relying on Android may become more reluctant to use the software and risk getting dragged into court.

"Some of these device makers might end up saying, 'We love Android, but we really don't want to fight with Apple anymore," said Christopher Marlett, CEO of MDB Capital Group, an investment bank specializing in intellectual property.

ISI Group analyst also viewed the verdict as a blow to Android, as much as Samsung.

During closing arguments at the trial, Apple attorney Harold McElhinny claimed Samsung was having a "crisis of design" after the 2007 launch of the iPhone, and executives with the South Korean company were determined to illegally cash in on the success of the revolutionary device.

Samsung's lawyers countered that it was legally giving consumers what they want: smartphones with big screens. They said Samsung didn't violate any of Apple's patents and further alleged innovations claimed by Apple were actually created by other companies.

Samsung, headquartered in Seoul, responded to the verdict, saying in a statement it was "unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners."

"Today's verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for the American consumer. It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices," Samsung said.

The jurors' determination that Samsung took Apple's ideas probably matters more to the companies than the damages figures, Marlett said.

"I don't know if $1 billion is hugely significant to Apple or Samsung," Marlett said. "But there is a social cost here. As a company, you don't want to be known as someone who steals from someone else. I am sure Samsung wants to be known as an innovator, especially since a lot of Asian companies have become known for copying the designs of innovators."

Samsung has emerged as one of Apple's biggest rivals and has overtaken as the leading smartphone maker. Samsung's Galaxy line of phones run on Android, a mobile operating system that Google Inc. has given out for free to Samsung and other phone makers.

Google entered the smartphone market while its then-CEO Eric Schmidt was on Apple's board, infuriating Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who considered Android to be a blatant rip off of the iPhone's innovations.

After shoving Schmidt off Apple's board, Jobs vowed that Apple would resort to "thermonuclear war" to destroy Android and its allies.

If Android lose any ground in the mobile computing market, that would hurt Google, too. That's because Google relies on Android to drive mobile traffic to its search engine and services to sell more advertising.

The Apple-Samsung trial came after each side filed a blizzard of legal motions and refused advisories by the judge to settle the dispute out of court. Deliberations by the jury of seven men and two women began Wednesday.

Jurors left the courthouse without addressing the scrum of international media who camped out at the San Jose courthouse for a month.

They notified the judge at about 2:30 p.m. that they had arrived at a verdict after deliberating two-and-a-half days. Many expected deliberations to last longer because of the complexity of the case.

Jurors filed into the courtroom silently Friday, the youngest juror who favored flipflops, shorts and playing videogames was wearing a Beatles sweatshirt and handed over the 20-page verdict form with little fanfare.

Apple and Samsung combined account for more than half of global smartphone sales. Samsung has sold 22.7 million smartphones and tablets that Apple claimed uses its technology. McElhinny said those devices accounted for $8.16 billion in sales since June 2010.

From the beginning, legal experts and Wall Street analysts viewed Samsung as the underdog. Apple's headquarters is a mere 10 miles from the San Jose courthouse, and jurors were picked from the heart of Silicon Valley where Jobs is a revered technological pioneer.

While the legal and technological issues were complex, patent expert Alexander I. Poltorak previously said the case would likely boil down to whether jurors believed Samsung's products look and feel almost identical to Apple's iPhone and iPad.

To overcome that challenge at trial, Samsung's lawyers argued that many of Apple's claims of innovation were either obvious concepts or ideas stolen from Sony Corp. and others. Experts called that line of argument a high-risk strategy because of Apple's reputation as an innovator.

Apple's lawyers argued there is almost no difference between Samsung products and those of Apple, and presented internal Samsung documents they said showed it copied Apple designs. Samsung lawyers insisted that several other companies and inventors had previously developed much of the Apple technology at issue.

Apple and Samsung have filed similar lawsuits in eight other countries, including South Korea, Germany, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, Britain, France and Australia.

"This is not the final word in this case or in battles being waged in courts and tribunals around the world, some of which have already rejected many of Apple's claims," Samsung said in its statement.

Samsung won a home court ruling earlier Friday in the global patent battle against Apple. Judges in Seoul said Samsung didn't copy the look and feel of the iPhone and ruled that Apple infringed on Samsung's wireless technology.

However, the judges also said Samsung violated Apple's technology behind the feature that causes a screen to bounce back when a user scrolls to an end image. Both sides were ordered to pay limited damages.

The Seoul ruling was a rare victory for Samsung in its arguments that Apple has infringed on its wireless technology patents. Samsung's claims have previously been shot down by courts in Europe, where judges have ruled that Samsung patents were part of industry standards that must be licensed under fair terms to competitors.

The U.S. case is one of some 50 lawsuits among myriad telecommunications companies jockeying for position in the burgeoning $219 billion market for computer tablets and smartphones.

Health Insurance: The What, When And Why | Marijuana for MRSA

Invest in a Health Savings Account to take care of the incidental needs not covered by your insurance policies. You can use these savings to cover your deductibles or pay for other health related items that are denied by your insurance company. You will earn interest on this account, and you can deduct that interest when you file your taxes.

Do not let your insurance policy lapse before you look and get new coverage. If your policy is going to be canceled due to unemployment, you can get help from the COBRA program that the government offers. This will help you keep ongoing coverage while you find a new job and avoid a lapse.

When you decide to apply for a new insurance plan, take it for a test drive! Many insurance companies afford you a period where you can cancel the policy if it doesn?t meet your needs. Make sure to ask when you sign up if your company offers this and how long the period is, and if there are any rules which will end the period immediately when you break them.

Know your health insurance coverage and the steps you need to take if something happens. If you are diagnosed with an illness and your doctor wants you to have some treatments or take certain medication, you should call your insurance company right away to see if the recommendations are covered on your policy.

Choose a PPO or HMO plan to save money on your health insurance premiums. While these plans limit your choices of doctors and hospitals, they can save you money when it comes to paying for health insurance. Most offer a wide range of doctors from which to choose, so you should still be able to get quality medical care with one of these plans.

Before you go out and choose your health insurance plan or carrier, make sure that you shop around and learn what everyone has to offer. There are tons of health insurance providers out there at this exact moment and you want to be sure that you find one that is a good match for you and your family.

When considering a health care insurance plan from your employer, be sure to take advantage of any plan that allows you to put aside certain amounts of pre-tax money from your paycheck. This is beneficial because you can save money by not paying taxes on income that is used for items that you will already be purchasing such as contacts or medical supplies.

If your health insurance premiums seem high, then it costs you nothing to shop around and get quotes from other companies. You may want to do this even if your insurance is provided through your employer. If you find a better plan and rate, then you can cancel your coverage through your employer and use your larger paycheck to pay for your own insurance plan.

Before getting a prescription filled, you should hand the pharmacist your insurance card. Some companies will actually pay a percentage of medication prescriptions for their customers. That means that you could save money on your prescriptions. You can look online to see what your policy does and does not cover.

If you have lost your job, you have two options when it comes to health insurance: opt for COBRA and pay the full premium your employer was paying on your behalf, or sign up for your own personal insurance plan. Your COBRA insurance may be expensive, but you could face trouble qualifying for a new insurance plan.

Obtaining health insurance as a group is generally less expensive than as an individual. A good example of this is when a company obtains health insurance for all their employees. The company gets a better rate than if an individual were to obtain the same plan. This does not mean however that you are out of luck if you are unemployed or if your employer does not offer health insurance. It is always possible for you to create your own group or join a group for health insurance discounts. Organizations that you can join include trade groups and alumni associations.

To get the most out of your health insurance, learn what your state requires companies to recover. Your insurance company may say they don?t cover a certain procedure, but if your state says that they do, then they have to comply. This can be a great way to get care or services you didn?t think were available to you.

It is very important to know the rules and regulations for health insurance in your state. Some states have laws about individuals with pre-existing conditions and others do not. Do your research so that you can make sure that you know what the laws are about health insurance in your state.

Now you know! Hopefully, you read some ideas that will help you with health insurance decisions. Understandably, with the cost of insurance in general rising, you need to have the proper coverage at the right price. Use the tips that apply to your own circumstances. Be prepared for the unexpected.

Real Estate Planning Elder Law Guide | Law

The first step in an elder law trusts and estates matter is usually to gain an understanding of the consumer?s family dynamics. If there are little ones, which is usually the case, we need to determine whether they are married. Is it a primary or second marriage? Do they have any children at a previous marriage or do their couples? What kind of work do many people do, and where do they dwell? Do they get along with 1 another and with the parent clients? We are looking to determine which family members are rarely getting along with which others and what exactly why may be. This goes a ways toward helping us decide who really should make medical decisions and who really should handle legal and financial affairs.

Your second step in an elder law trusts and estates matter is usually to review any prior estate planning documents your customer may have, such as a will probably, trust, power of attorney, health health care proxy and living will, to determine whether or not they are legally sufficient and reflect the client?s current wishes or whether or not they are outdated.

Synthetic cuts development staff, refocuses business | TUAW - The ...

Even though Synthetic is still actively launching products, the makers of Hipstamatic have cut its core staff as it tries to refocus on the future.

The company has dropped to five employees, and those let go received full severance packages, The Next Web reports. It initially reported that Synthetic wasn't making enough money, though the company later contacted TNW to refute that. TNW also posted a tweet by developer Jonathan Wight, one of those let go, who said his team was "totally squandered where we are."

Synthetic CEO Lucas Buick said the layoff happened as more of an effort to return the company to its art and creative roots. Hipstamatic is a lifestyle culture brand, he said, and not a typical software company.

Synthetic's major release this year is Snap Magazine, a free culture magazine for the iPad that's driven by Hipstamatic photography. Buick said in his blog post that there are more than 100,000 subscribers since its launch a couple months ago.

Even though Hipstamatic is well-received, it's currently ranked 11th in paid photo and video apps on the App Store and 93 overall. It's stuck behind powerhouses Camera+ and Instagram, the latter which has garnered plenty of mainstream media attention thanks to its acquisition by Facebook, along with TIME and Sports Illustrated magazines utilizing Instagram images in their print editions.

Back to School... Back to Business | New Home Sales Training ...

In this issue I am going to relate ?Back to School? with Leadership! It is our privilege and responsibility to lead?this I believe. Whether leading a Team, a group, a student, a child or better yet YOU, someone is leading someone at every moment of the day! I ask you this question: Are you leading in great ways, or being led by great people, are you following the right things, or are you just surviving?

Let?s commit to being the best leaders we can for all those students about to embark upon another exciting school year! Find a child to lead?Give them purpose and possibilities into a better future from education and all that it offers in every way.

Back to School is Back to the Business of growing to be the best that you can be! What are you doing to further your education in life to be on track to being the best YOU that YOU can be? We should all take a minute at this time of year to get back in the groove of ?Perpetual Learning? maybe instead of Back to School; it is Stay in School.

In combining ?Leading and Learning? I think we need to look at it as; paying it forward?Lead with what you have learned! I love this statement from Bill Hybels, ?Everyone wins when a leader gets better!?

So as the kids go back to school, and we stay in the perpetual school of learning along with them, let?s be great leaders and influence positively and powerfully this school year!

Ensure you have the right balance today; all your tomorrows are the gathering of your todays! Make your tomorrows and those of someone else better by creating a ?Learning & Leading? transfer strategy.

Points to Ponder:

1)????? Family vs. Work; ask those involved about your current time proportions, their opinion counts in staying balanced (kids in school deserve your undivided attention sometimes!)

2)????? Urgent vs. Important; is your energy being wisely spent? What is the real impact of either doing or not doing something, it will tell the story. Urgent is present. Important is future. Invest in the future!

3)????? Pride vs Humility; be proud of yourself and others as a leader; balance the pride of accomplishment with humility in success. This encourages others to continue to support your success and strive for theirs.

4)????? Good vs. Great; always go to good and then when appropriate move on to great. Balance efforts against possible results when deciding what is appropriate! Most importantly look for the good in all and nurture the greatness they have within themselves! Don?t let having the ?Perfect Child? get in the way of raising a Great One!

5)????? Influence vs. Control; a powerful way to help nurture personal growth is by developing personal independence. Understand who you are influencing and take it very personally and protect that privilege.

Back to School it is?.Leading the way to better days for all those we are lucky enough to have the privilege to touch! Go forth and model the way, inspire creativity, enable others to succeed, and encourage the heart!

Happy 2012-2013 school year ?because after all each one of us should be in the school of learning and leading each and every day!

Baby Envy

by Robyn Wright on August 23, 2012

in Living

baby feetI am 42. My husband had a vasectomy years ago. No more babies for me. This makes me sad. I really am struggling with baby envy right now. Not just baby envy even, but young children envy. My son is 17 and just does not need me like he used to. I feel like my mom time is ending, but I do not want it to at all. Do you ever feel that way? Like you have a lot more momminess left in you?

If it were up to me I would actually adopt some kids. To me it would not matter if they were infants or not even. However, Hubby and T are not on board with that at all ? they both want nothing to do with expanding our family. Without everyone being willing it just is not possible sadly.

So many of my online friends are sharing that they are newly pregnant lately. I am so thrilled for all of them, but very envious at the same time. Not that I really am great at being pregnant, but just the fact that they get to experience starting at the beginning again. Then there are all the back to school pictures of the kids the last few days. T stared school a couple of weeks ago ? this is his last year ? sigh. Plus in high school there is no room parties to volunteer to be a room mom at, no family fun nights at school, no open house where the kids are so excited to show you their new desk and introduce you to their newest teacher.

I do understand that I have a lot of wonderful things in my life. I appreciate them all. But still, sometimes, I still just want to have that little baby to snuggle with, or the toddler to tuck into bed, or the young ones to bring me home an ?I love mom? craft project home from school. Planning the perfect Halloween costume, making plans to see Santa, helping them create a fun box for their Valentine?s at school, and going to school to see them perform in the elementary school spring concert. Sigh.

When I tell people about my baby envy they say ?you can borrow mine?, but it is not the same. I do have my wonderful nephew Colby to spoil, but again it is not the same. Yes, I can volunteer and various agencies and schools to enjoy time with other?s children too, it?s just not the same as my own though.

Have you been through this?

Recent Warming of Antarctica "Unusual But Not Unprecedented"

First time accepted submitter tomhath writes with a link to the abstract (full article paywalled) in Nature of an "Ice core study that concludes that climate change and associated melting of ice in Antarctica is more the norm than the exception, including rapid warming cycles as we appear to be in today. Study concludes: 'Although warming of the northeastern Antarctic Peninsula began around 600 years ago, the high rate of warming over the past century is unusual (but not unprecedented) in the context of natural climate variability over the past two millennia. The connection shown here between past temperature and ice-shelf stability suggests that warming for several centuries rendered ice shelves on the northeastern Antarctic Peninsula vulnerable to collapse.'"

Mars rover Curiosity begins driving at Bradbury landing

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has begun driving from its landing site, which scientists announced today they have named for the late author Ray Bradbury.

Making its first movement on the Martian surface, Curiosity's drive combined forward, turn and reverse segments. This placed the rover roughly 20 feet (6 meters) from the spot where it landed 16 days ago.

NASA has approved the Curiosity science team's choice to name the landing ground for the influential author who was born 92 years ago today and died this year. The location where Curiosity touched down is now called Bradbury Landing.

"This was not a difficult choice for the science team," said Michael Meyer, NASA program scientist for Curiosity. "Many of us and millions of other readers were inspired in our lives by stories Ray Bradbury wrote to dream of the possibility of life on Mars."

Today's drive confirmed the health of Curiosity's mobility system and produced the rover's first wheel tracks on Mars, documented in images taken after the drive. During a news conference today at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., the mission's lead rover driver, Matt Heverly, showed an animation derived from visualization software used for planning the first drive.

"We have a fully functioning mobility system with lots of amazing exploration ahead," Heverly said.

Curiosity will spend several more days of working beside Bradbury Landing, performing instrument checks and studying the surroundings, before embarking toward its first driving destination approximately 1,300 feet (400 meters) to the east-southeast.

"Curiosity is a much more complex vehicle than earlier Mars rovers. The testing and characterization activities during the initial weeks of the mission lay important groundwork for operating our precious national resource with appropriate care," said Curiosity Project Manager Pete Theisinger of JPL. "Sixteen days in, we are making excellent progress."

The science team has begun pointing instruments on the rover's mast for investigating specific targets of interest near and far. The Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument used a laser and spectrometers this week to examine the composition of rocks exposed when the spacecraft's landing engines blew away several inches of overlying material.

The instrument's principal investigator, Roger Weins of Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, reported that measurements made on the rocks in this scoured-out feature called Goulburn suggest a basaltic composition. "These may be pieces of basalt within a sedimentary deposit," Weins said.

Curiosity began a two-year prime mission on Mars when the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft delivered the car-size rover to its landing target inside Gale Crater on Aug. 5 PDT (Aug. 6 EDT). The mission will use 10 science instruments on the rover to assess whether the area has ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.

In a career spanning more than 70 years, Ray Bradbury inspired generations of readers to dream, think and create. A prolific author of hundreds of short stories and nearly to 50 books, as well as numerous poems, essays, operas, plays, teleplays, and screenplays, Bradbury was one of the most celebrated writers of our time.

His groundbreaking works include "Fahrenheit 451," "The Martian Chronicles," "The Illustrated Man," "Dandelion Wine," and "Something Wicked This Way Comes." He wrote the screenplay for John Huston's classic film adaptation of "Moby Dick," and was nominated for an Academy Award. He adapted 65 of his stories for television's "The Ray Bradbury Theater," and won an Emmy for his teleplay of "The Halloween Tree."

JPL manages the Mars Science Laboratory/Curiosity for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The rover was designed, developed and assembled at JPL.
