Oil slips as US growth lags expectations

NEW YORK (AP) ? The price of oil slipped after two days of strong gains as U.S. economic growth was slightly slower than expected.

By midday in New York Friday, benchmark oil for June delivery was down $1.18, or 1.3 percent, to $92.46 a barrel. Oil gained $4.46, or 5 percent, over the two prior days.

U.S. economic growth accelerated to an annual rate of 2.5 percent from January through March from an anemic pace in the previous quarter. But the markets were expecting growth of 3 percent or better.

The U.S. figure follows last week's report of slower-than-expected growth in China, raising questions about demand in the world's biggest oil-consuming countries.

At the pump, the average price for a gallon of gasoline was $3.51, down 32 cents from a year ago.

Brent crude, which is used to price oil from the North Sea used by many U.S. refiners, was down 80 cents to $102.61 a barrel on the ICE futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

? Gasoline fell 1 cent to $2.80 per gallon.

? Heating oil declined 2 cents to $2.86 a gallon.

? Natural gas lost 5 cents to $4.11 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Movement of pyrrole molecules defy 'classical' physics

Apr. 26, 2013 ? New research shows that movement of the ring-like molecule pyrrole over a metal surface runs counter to the centuries-old laws of 'classical' physics that govern our everyday world.

Using uniquely sensitive experimental techniques, scientists have found that laws of quantum physics -- believed primarily to influence at only sub-atomic levels -- can actually impact on a molecular level.

Researchers at Cambridge's Chemistry Department and Cavendish Laboratory say they have evidence that, in the case of pyrrole, quantum laws affecting the internal motions of the molecule change the "very nature of the energy landscape" -- making this 'quantum motion' essential to understanding the distribution of the whole molecule.

The study, a collaboration between scientists from Cambridge and Rutgers universities, appeared in the German chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie earlier this month.

A pyrrole molecule's centre consists of a "flat pentagram" of five atoms, four carbon and one nitrogen. Each of these atoms has an additional hydrogen atom attached, sticking out like spokes.

Following experiments performed by Barbara Lechner at the Cavendish Laboratory to determine the energy required for movement of pyrrole across a copper surface, the team discovered a discrepancy that led them down a 'quantum' road to an unusual discovery.

In previous work on simpler molecules, the scientists were able to accurately calculate the 'activation barrier' -- the energy required to loosen a molecule's bond to a surface, allowing movement -- using 'density functional theory', a method that treats the electrons which bind the atoms according to quantum mechanics but, crucially, deals with atomic nuclei using a 'classical' physics approach.

Surprisingly, with pyrrole the predicted 'activation barriers' were way out, with calculations "less than a third of the measured value." After much head scratching, puzzled scientists turned to a purely quantum phenomenon called 'zero-point energy'.

In classical physics, an object losing energy can continue to do so until it can be thought of as sitting perfectly still. In the quantum world, this is never the case: everything always retains some form of residual -- even undetectable -- energy, known as 'zero-point energy'.

While 'zero-point energy' is well known to be associated with motion of the atoms contained in molecules, it was previously believed that such tiny amounts of energy simply don't affect the molecule as a whole to any measurable extent, unless the molecule broke apart.

But now, the researchers have discovered that the "quantum nature" of the molecule's internal motion actually does affect the molecule as a whole as it moves across the surface, defying the 'classical' laws that it's simply too big to feel quantum effects.

'Zero-point energy' moving within a pyrrole molecule is unexpectedly sensitive to the exact site occupied by the molecule on the surface. In moving from one site to another, the 'activation energy' must include a sizeable contribution due to the change in the quantum 'zero-point energy'.

Scientists believe the effect is particularly noticeable in the case of pyrrole because the 'activation energy' needed for diffusion is particularly small, but that many other similar molecules ought to show the same kind of behavior.

"Understanding the nature of molecular diffusion on metal surfaces is of great current interest, due to efforts to manufacture two-dimensional networks of ring-like molecules for use in optical, electronic or spintronic devices," said Dr Stephen Jenkins, who heads up the Surface Science Group in Cambridge's Department of Chemistry.

"The balance between the activation energy and the energy barrier that sticks the molecules to the surface is critical in determining which networks are able to form under different conditions."

Italy center-left tensions rise as Renzi cries foul

By James Mackenzie

ROME (Reuters) - Italy's center-left alliance showed new signs of division on Wednesday after the chief rival to Democratic Party leader Pier Luigi Bersani denounced the party hierarchy as efforts to form a government enter a critical phase.

The deadlock has left the euro zone's third-largest economy with only a caretaker government in charge as it slides further into a recession that many analysts expect will last until at least next year.

Matteo Renzi, the 38-year-old mayor of Florence who challenged Bersani unsuccessfully in a party primary last year, has voiced increasingly open dissent as the long stalemate since February's inconclusive election has dragged on.

He has so far not attacked Bersani by name but has called for an end to the impasse since the vote, saying the center-left must either drop objections to dealing with Silvio Berlusconi's center-right bloc or accept the need for new elections.

"Personally I'm one of those who hopes we vote as soon as possible because the elections did not produce a majority," he said. "Every day we wait is a day wasted for Italy."

In a sign of the mounting friction in the center-left, he accused unnamed Democratic Party officials of working to undermine him behind the scenes.

"I'm only sorry about the duplicity of people who talk in one way and act in another. I'd only say to these two-faced people: maybe I won't succeed in changing politics but politics won't change me," he wrote on his Facebook page.

Behind the backbiting is a potentially serious breach within the center-left, which has struggled to contain its divisions since Bersani failed to secure a viable majority in parliament despite a strong opinion poll lead before the vote.

STALEMATE

More than 40 days after the election on February 25, the divided political parties are still no closer to reaching an agreement which would allow a new government to be formed.

Boosted by opinion polls which suggest the Democratic Party (PD) could win 32.5 percent of the vote with him at its head compared with 28.2 percent under Bersani, Renzi has made clear his ambition to lead the center-left if new elections are held.

For his part, the 61-year-old Bersani has said that fresh elections would be a disaster, although he has ruled out a so-called "grand coalition" with Berlusconi.

The immediate cause of Renzi's anger was his failure to be chosen as one of the regional representatives taking part in the election of Italy's next president to succeed Giorgio Napolitano, whose term expires on May 15.

The selection of the president is the next big test facing the rival parties, which vote in a joint sitting of the two houses of parliament, along with representatives from the regions.

After a close vote by the PD group in the local government of his home region of Tuscany, Renzi was not selected as one of the region's three electors, prompting him to blame unidentified "telephone calls from Rome".

Bersani denied any involvement in an interview on Rai 1 television on Wednesday.

"I made absolutely no such phone call," Bersani said, adding that the selection of electors was the least of the PD's problems at the moment as he reaffirmed his determination to form a government.

The breach between the two will weigh on efforts to hold the party together as the deadlock left by the election continues.

Bersani met Berlusconi on Tuesday to try to find some ground for agreement ahead of the vote for president. The two sides said the encounter went well but there was no sign of any agreement on forming a government.

Exclusive: Carlyle taps UBS banker to launch its first Indonesia office

By Janeman Latul, Stephen Aldred and Michael Flaherty

JAKARTA/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Carlyle Group LP has hired a former UBS banker to launch an Indonesia office, people with direct knowledge of the matter said, becoming the first major private equity firm to set up shop on its own in Southeast Asia's largest economy.

Carlyle has tapped Rajiv Louis, a banker with a decade of dealmaking experience in Indonesia, to be its country head and build up the firm's business across the booming archipelago.

Southeast Asian M&A activity has surged in recent years and burgeoning IPO markets have attracted investors scoping out exit routes. Indonesia has especially piqued private equity interest with its large market and rising middle class.

Players in the sector have moved cautiously, however, as company sizes tend to be smaller, political stability remains a concern, and volatile financial markets are a constant worry.

Carlyle, founded in 1987 by three colleagues and named after the New York hotel where they gathered for early meetings, has gone from a U.S.-focused leveraged buyout firm to a global asset manager with more than $170 billion under management.

The firm, like several of its competitors, is increasingly looking at Indonesia and other fast-growing Southeast Asian markets as fertile ground for Asian deal-making, after focusing much of its early attention on Greater China and North Asia.

Louis, 42, an American who was born in Sri Lanka, left UBS AG earlier this year, the people said. Hired in 2003 by the bank, he was the UBS country head of Indonesia and head of its Indonesian investment banking business prior to his departure. Louis declined to comment for this story.

Washington D.C.-based Carlyle, which has had ownership stakes in such brands as Dunkin' Donuts and Hertz Car Rental, also declined to comment.

DEALMAKING EXPERIENCE

Louis's dealmaking experience, according to people familiar with the matter, includes serving as a key adviser for Carlyle last year on its first investment ever in Southeast Asia: a 25 percent stake in publicly traded Indonesian telecom towers operator PT Solusi Tunas Pratama worth $100 million.

Indonesia's economy and financial markets have surged in recent years, and buyout firms have been drawn to its consumer, natural resources, financial and infrastructure sectors.

The country has a history, however, of extreme volatility and corruption that has kept many foreign investors at bay. Only a few foreign private equity firms have placed bets there.

TPG Capital Management LP has been working with homegrown Indonesian fund Northstar since 2005, and in 2011 the two swapped stakes to cement the relationship.

The goal for the industry is the kind of investment returns that CVC Capital Partners Ltd made on its 2010 investment in PT Matahari Department Store TBK . The firm and PT Multipolar Tbk raised around $1.3 billion by selling 40 percent of their stake in the Indonesian retail giant.

The deal flow in Southeast Asia has grown in recent years, along with the rise in the region's economies and markets.

Completed Southeast Asia M&A deal volume jumped from less than $100 million in the first quarter of 2009 to $1.8 billion in the first quarter of 2013, according to Thomson Reuters data. Over the past two years, M&A volume has reached $113 billion, compared with just $20 billion in the six years before that, the data show.

Watch Benson Henderson train with with NFL star Larry Fitzgerald

UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson met up with fellow Arizonan Larry Fitzgerald, the All-Pro receiver for the Arizona Cardinals. Henderson, who will fight Gilbert Melendez at UFC on Fox 7 on April 20, worked out with Fitzgerald, and had the football player winded by the end of their session.

Though Fitzgerald is working out with Henderson as off-season training, Henderson rightly points out that Fitzgerald could be a great fighter. At 6-foot-3, 218 lbs, he could make an interesting light heavyweight or even middleweight, and he wouldn't have to deal with Arizona's lack of a quarterback.

Chrysler recalls 120,000 vehicles for airbag issues

Chrysler is recalling 120,000 of its full-size models because of problems with airbag warning lights that trigger for no apparent reason.

It?s the latest in a series of industry-wide safety-related problems involving faulty wiring that reflect the increasingly complexity of today?s high-tech automobiles. In some cases, the issues have been mere inconveniences, but in other instances the problems can lead to serious safety problems, such as vehicle fires and brake intervention systems that trigger for no obvious reason, leading to a potential loss of vehicle control.

The Detroit Bureau: Maserati Goes for the Mainstream with New 4-Door Ghibli

The new Chrysler recall involves 119,500 of its Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans, as well as the Dodge Challenger muscle coupe. The airbag warning lights appear to trigger for no reason and do not mean that they have become deactivated.

The maker says it was advised of the problem though customer complaints and adds there have been no reports of injuries or accidents. It blames faulty wiring for the problem.

The Detroit Bureau: Chinese to be First to Build Detroit's Radical New, High-Mileage OPOC Engine

The recall covers vehicles produced between April through December of 2011, some marketed as 2011 models, others during the 2012 model-year

Owners will be notified of the problem starting this month and repairs will be made at no charge. The maker also plans to reimburse owners who have previously paid for warning light repairs.

The 2013 version of the Dodge Challenger was subject to a separate wiring-related recall announced less than a month ago. In this case, faulty wiring harnesses can overheat and lead to a fire. The maker went so far as to warn owners to park their vehicles until repairs could be made.

The Detroit Bureau: Honda and Acura Have Big Plans to Reveal at Shanghai Auto Show

About the same time, Honda announced a short-circuit in a stability control unit on as many as 250,000 different vehicles could cause their brakes to briefly operate without any input from the driver.

Toyota, meanwhile, began the year with a recall of 752,000 vehicles due to a short-circuit that could could cause the airbags on some Corolla and Matrrix models, as well as the front seat pre-tensioners to inadvertently deploy. The Japanese giant last year recalled several million products because of a faulty driver?s-side window switch that could lead to smoke or even vehicle fires.

Industry analysts note that today?s automobiles have become high-tech systems that rival ? and typically exceed ? the complexity of the most advanced consumer electronic devices. Where problems with a faulty circuit board on a smartphone or audio system might be an inconvenience or lead the customer to swap out the device at a store, the greater risks faced with flawed vehicle control circuits has been leading to a steady increase in related recalls.

By comparison, problems with more conventional mechanical defects, such as engine failures, appear to be on the decline, according to research by J.D. Power and Associates.
