Last year the discovery of a foot bone revealed that, more than three million years ago, the hominid species whose most famous member is known as Lucy probably walked upright.
Now a new study reveals that the species, Australopithecus afarensis, was also quite apelike, and very capable of climbing trees. The research is based on the analysis of the shoulder bones of Selam, a 3-year-old of the same species.
?The position or orientation of the shoulder joint was very gorillalike,? said Zeresenay Alemseged, a paleoanthropologist at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco and one of the study?s authors.
?We compared it to the primate database,? Dr. Alemseged said. ?This is the earliest, most complete scapula ever analyzed.?
He and his colleague David J. Green, an anatomist at Midwestern University, report their findings in the current issue of the journal Science.
Dr. Alemseged speculates that Lucy, Selam and their kin climbed trees to hide from predators and search for food, and perhaps even to nest.
Exactly how much time they spent in trees is hard to say. Other research has revealed that many traits of the species? hip bone, lower limb and foot are humanlike and well suited for upright walking.
Dr. Alemseged was part of the team that discovered Selam in 2000, in Ethiopia. It took about 10 years to analyze the paper-thin scapula, which was embedded in sandstone, Dr. Alemseged said.
Lucy, a partial skeleton of the species, was discovered in 1974.

In an advance toward analyzing blood and urine instantly at a patient's bedside instead of waiting for results from a central laboratory, scientists are reporting development of a new micropump capable of producing pressures almost 500 times higher than the pressure in a car tire. Described in ACS' journal Analytical Chemistry, the pumps are for futuristic "labs-on-a-chip," which reduce entire laboratories to the size of a postage stamp.
Shaorong Liu and colleagues explain that powerful pumps are critical for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), a mainstay laboratory testing technology used in medical diagnosis, drug screening and numerous other purposes. HPLC can analyze 80 percent of all known chemical compounds. Scientists are trying to miniaturize HPLC for handheld devices, which would eliminate the need to send samples to central labs and wait for the results. One stumbling block, however, is the lack of suitable small, powerful pumps to push samples through HPLC devices.
They describe invention of a device six times more powerful than the best existing pump of this kind. Linked together in series, their electroosmotic pumps can produce more than 17,000 pounds per square inch of pressure. The pumps use electroosmotic flow, in which an electrical current makes charged particles flow through a narrow channel. The new pumps could produce even higher pressures, the scientists report.

When German car manufacturer Audi purchased Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati last April, many motorcyclists scratched their head in confusion. Ducatisti wept, concerned that the automotive giant would impose Teutonic rigidity on their beloved, flamboyantly Italian marque.
The hand-wringing wasn?t necessary. Audi doesn?t micromanage Lamborghini, its other high-profile Italian holding. And when Audi CEO Rupert Stadler addressed Ducati?s workforce in July, he made a significant promise: ?Ladies and gentlemen?you have my guarantee: Ducati remains Ducati.?
Recently I traveled to Bilbao, Spain, for the world press launch of the 2013 Ducati Multistrada 1200. Our flight from Los Angeles to Bilbao included a 24-hour layover in Munich, Germany, which gave us an opportunity to drink liters of dunkel and scarf sausages, sauerkraut and pretzels at the Hofbrauhaus during Oktoberfest. But the primary reason for our time in Bavaria was a visit to the Audi Museum at the company?s headquarters in Ingolstadt, about an hour from Munich.
Not being a car guy, I didn?t know much about Audi, and I was completely ignorant of the company?s long history. To my surprise, interspersed among the dozens of automobiles spanning more than 100 years of production history, were numerous motorcycles. And they weren?t there just to appease a small handful of North American moto-journalists. The motorcycles are part of the museum?s permanent collection.
August Horch established his own automobile company, A. Horch & Cie, in 1899. Ten years later, Horch was ousted by the supervisory board, and he founded a separate company called Audi. (Horch means ?hear? in German, and Audi means ?to listen? in Latin.) In the early 1930s, Audi merged with Horch, DKW and Wanderer, forming Auto Union. DKW and Wanderer were two German manufacturers of both automobiles and motorcycles. Thus began the use of the badge showing four interlocking rings?one for each company in the union?that continues to be used today in Audi?s logo.
Due to the upheaval of World War II and the changing landscape of the automobile market in Germany, some Auto Union brands faded away and the company rode a rollercoaster of mergers and acquisitions. Daimler-Benz acquired Auto Union in 1958, and then sold it soon thereafter because it wasn?t profitable. Volkswagen acquired Auto Union in the mid-1960s, and in 1969 the company merged with NSU, another German automobile and motorcycle manufacturer.
During the 1970s and early 1980s, Audi became established as a worldwide brand, while Auto Union and NSU were relegated to the dustbin. Even though motorcycles have never been manufactured under the Audi brand, nor are they likely to be in the future, motorized two-wheelers have been an important part of the company?s varied history. There aren?t yet any Ducatis at the Audi Museum, but they will fit right in!

The Saints? defense got outsmarted by Broncos QB Peyton Manning.
The Buccaneers are 0-5 all-time in Oakland.
Said Cardinals QB John Skelton of the team having nine rushes for seven yards on Monday night, ?The reason we abandoned the run game was because we couldn?t do it.?
The 49ers are getting a six-day break during their bye week.
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says there?s no doubt in anyone?s mind in the Seattle locker room that the team is heading in the right direction.

You have to realize that you won?t ?get rich quick? online. Anybody who tells you that you can earn $30,000 within the next 30 days is lying to you. You can?t believe the hype that alot of these products contain. You will find people ?teaching? you how to make $30,000 within the next 30 days, and sell this information in a $19 ebook. These people don?t know what they?re talking about.
It?s up to you to learn how to discern the hype and misleading information, so that you can proceed with implementing strategies that will be more productive for you. I can remember when I first got started online, I bought this $497 product that was supposed to show me how to make $10,000 a month on the internet.
The product was actually good, plus it can with the rights to resell the product also - so I was excited. However when I tried to put the product up online for $397? NOBODY purchased from me. Apparently the charm that I saw in the product wasn?t good enough for others to purchase? especially at $397.
I had wasted thousands of dollars on ads trying to make it work, but nobody would buy whatsoever. Needless to say, I was driven out of business, and had to return to my $6.50 an hour day job. I felt pathetic, but it was a learning experience that I will never forget. I can tell you that for sure.
So what about you? Are you looking to make fast cash online, or do you want to build up your business in a sound, organized way? and get rich SLOW?? Hopefully you do, because all the hype online is ridiculous, and you have to be able to look past it. It has taken me years to do, but I now ?have the vision? lol.
Seriously though, you have to run your online business as if it were an offline business. Market your business hard, do joint ventures, start your own affiliate program, create new products, offer monthly memberships, run ads in highly targeted publications, and etc. This will allow you to get the most out of your online marketing efforts.
You need a plan of attack, and you have to start creating this plan right away. Don?t delay? your competitors are out there right now scooping up customers that could have been your?s. If you need a new website design, consult with a web designer, or visit a forum called the ?Warrior Forum? and ask people there to critique your site and suggest changes.
You can make it online. Stay diligent, and you will see your goals come to life. Trust me on this, I would know.
Good luck with earning the money in your business that you are looking for.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A government spokesman says a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a mosque in northern Afghanistan on Friday, killing at least 20 people and wounding 50.
The attack in the town of Maymana, capital of northern Faryab province, came as people were gathering at the mosque to celebrate the Eid al-Adha holiday, said Jawid Didar, spokesman for the governor's office.
Top provincial officials, including the governor and the police chief, were inside the building when the bomber set off his explosives outside, where a large crowd had gathered, Didar said. The officials were not hurt.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Medical device maker Medtronic Inc. helped write and edit medical journal articles attributed to outside physicians, which downplayed the risks of the company's best-selling bone graft, according to a report by Senate investigators.
The Senate Finance Committee says Medtronic did not disclose its role in shaping the articles, which helped turn the Infuse bone graft into an $800 million a year product. Senate investigators also say Medtronic did not disclose $210 million in payments to the authors for unrelated consulting work over 15 years.
The report follows years of scrutiny into Medtronic's promotion of Infuse, which is widely used for procedures not deemed safe or effective.
The Minneapolis company says it disagrees with many of the findings in the report.

>> okay. how much would this run you?
>> we estimate at $400,000 to $600,000.
>> it's beautiful. next we have the " sound of music ." two iconic dresses. this first one we recognize julianne drews wore this.
>> that's right. we estimate this $40,000 to $60,000. and like " wizard of oz ," there are few items available from the " sound of music ." the second outfit worn.
>> what kind of person buys these items?
>> well, a lot of museums, personal collectors, fans, but now investors. people are starting to collect pop culture in hopes it's going to continue to increase in value.
>> wonderful. we're on to you, martin. the marilyn video. now, first of all, we've all seen that image of her singing happy birthday to the president. where did this video come from?
>> 1962 , this video was taken by a member of the ella fitzgerald band. it's from a different angle and in color. it's a great video, eight minutes long, marilyn appears in for 30 seconds. great images of marilyn monroe .
>> you get a different angle, but it is silent video, right? you don't hear the singing on this particular one?
>> yes, that is correct. but again, we were talking about over 50 years old. and it's 50 years since marilyn passed away and the love affair goes on. people can't get enough of marilyn .

DETROIT (AP) ? An ace pitcher and some of the game's best sluggers are the winning combination that has put the Detroit Tigers in the World Series for the second time since 2006. But miles away from Comerica Park, much of the city still seems many seasons from its own grand slam.
When the Series returns to Detroit Saturday for Game 3, TV viewers will get a glimpse of a vibrant downtown, including Comerica, the General Motors towers, popular restaurants and flashy casinos. High-end grocer Whole Foods is building its first Detroit store north of Comerica, and wealthy investors are snapping up vacant buildings and filling them with workers.
Yet beyond this pocket of revitalization, much of Detroit still is struggling to make a comeback after the Great Recession sent the city and the auto industry on a perilous plunge. Public finances are unstable, thousands of homes sit vacant, homicides are on the rise and many residents have left or want to leave.
"In '06, it wasn't as intense as it is now," said barber Thomas Carter, referring to the Tigers last trip to the World Series as he cut hair at the C-Spot, 15 miles northwest of Comerica Park. "The city is in more desperation today. The blight and the black eyes weren't as bad."
Indeed, life in the neighborhoods seems a world away from downtown. The area around the ballpark has been a bright spot for the otherwise struggling city, and its success has been difficult to replicate.
Downtown's rise took years to take hold. Tigers' owner Mike Ilitch reopened the rehabbed Fox Theatre in 1988, starting a slow revival along the historic, brick-paved artery, Woodward Avenue. In 2000, Ilitch moved the Tigers to a new stadium across the street from the Fox. Others have followed, including the Detroit Lions and its Ford Field, home of the 2006 Super Bowl.
The area is now buzzing. The new owners of Detroit Medical Center are investing hundreds of millions of dollars in hospitals. Employers are successfully offering subsidies to get workers to live downtown or in Midtown. Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert has acquired nearly a dozen buildings and other properties, even luring Chrysler as a tenant and renaming the building after the automaker.
"Government is in terrible shape but entrepreneurs are thriving," said Joel Landy, who has no-vacancy signs on his rehabbed apartment buildings in and near downtown. "It's the proximity to large institutions and the central business district, and the fact that we're surrounded by five freeways with the ability to get in and out. ... It's slower out in the neighborhoods but remember: Detroit is 140 square miles."
Downtown shines partly because its attractions ? sports teams, casinos, fine arts ? are enjoyed by suburbanites who head out of the city as soon as the show or game is over. To former council member Sheila Cockrel, the distinction between downtown and the neighborhoods is a modern day "tale of two cities."
"There's exciting momentum going on. But on the other hand, we've had what's now close to a collapse of city services," said Cockrel, who teaches at Wayne State University.
City government staved off a state takeover last spring after agreeing on many reforms, including an independent board to oversee public finances, which are burdened by more than $12 billion in pension obligations and dwindling tax revenue.
Mayor Dave Bing this week pleaded with the City Council to hire turnaround firms to examine city operations. The police chief recently quit because of an affair with another officer, forcing the city to search for a fifth top cop in four years. There were 311 homicides through Oct. 21, more than at the same point in 2011, and vast stretches of deserted neighborhoods have become a dumping ground for bodies.
More than 30,000 houses are empty. Though pockets of Detroit are relatively stable, others are flat-out dangerous, with the abandoned homes breeding drug trafficking and other crimes. The city's population has dropped 25 percent since 2000, and a recent survey found four out of every 10 residents plan to dash, too.
Reliable bus service is a chronic complaint. William Smith, 43, helped his girlfriend board a bus on the west side this week to a nursing job in the suburbs. While waiting, she sat on a broken light pole that rested on the sidewalk.
Smith, a laborer, said he's unemployed after having his van and tools worth $7,000 stolen from his driveway.
"If you ain't got a car, you're out of luck when it comes to finding many jobs. There ain't no jobs in the city," he said.
Lanard Strong, 38, was shot in the arm and leg in 2008 while withdrawing cash from an ATM. Tired of blight and corruption, he doubts he can sell his house on the west side. "I've always wanted to just leave," he said.
Despite the obstacles, a can-do spirit always seems to be in the next block. On Saturday, just hours before Game 3, volunteers will haul plywood and swing hammers to board up 150 abandoned homes near a high school on the west side. The goal is to save homes that could be occupied in better times, as well as improve safety for kids who walk past urban wrecks.
And back at the C-Spot, they're rooting for the Tigers.
"We're hungry for something to laugh and smile about," owner Crystal Jackson said. "We live in such hard times right now in the city of Detroit. Something as small as sport is looked at bigger than it actually should be."
