Direct Resources has reached a significant milestone, having manually processed one million individual records (1,000,078) from 19th century trade directories. Every settlement from 34 of the English counties has been processed in its entirety from original sources; so far 4,982 settlements have been arranged in database format. The remaining English counties have been partially processed and will be completed soon.
The aim of this project is to complete a digital survey of the entire UK at or around 1850 using trades directories. Wales, the Isle of Man and Ireland have been completed, as has much of England. Three lowland Scottish counties have been completed, with the rest of Scotland to be completed in due course.
A simple five field database has been used to capture the data, four fields hold the names, occupations and addresses of the people listed in the directories.
The material for each county is available on CD. Depending on the software used, simple searches of the data are possible, by name, occupation or location.
