South Sarasota will get a new craft store when Hobby Lobby moves into the former Kmart at 8191 S. Tamiami Trail later this year.?

The Oklahoma City-based craft store confirmed with Patch on Monday that the store will open a 56,267-square-foot store in mid-summer. Herald-Tribune business reporter Justine Griffin first broke the news on Twitter Monday receiving confirmation from Benderson Development executives.

?We feel that the market is underserved and that we can bring a very unique shopping experience to the Sarasota area,? The Kmart at the Benderson-owned shopping center closed in 2008. A Staples and Pizza Hut are attached to the Kmart building in the shopping center located between the South Trail and Beneva Road.

Hobby Lobby is based in Oklahoma City, founded by David Green, and has more than 500 stores in 41 states, and has been expanding recently, including Benderson properties on Cortez Road in Bradenton and North Port?s Cocoplum Village shops.

The stores carry furniture and vases to clocks, birdhouses and arts and crafts supplies.

The company is also known for its religious views as much as its crafts, with the family owning the world?s largest collection of Biblical antiquities and operates Hobby Lobby ?in a manner consistent with Biblical principles,? according to a press release.

Full-time hourly employees start out at $13 per hour while part-time employees start at $9 per hour, according to a news release.?

?The store manager and our co-manager usually train in other stores and come with the store,? Parker said. ?We always hope to hire any where from 30 to 50 local employees in various positions: cashiers, stockers, custom picture framers, office manager, floral designer, ?department heads? for the different areas of our store (Floral, fabric, needlework, art, hobbies, wearable?s, jewelry, crafts, cards and party, scrapbooking, seasonal and house accents).??

The craft company has made headlines in December for its stance of defying the Affordable Care Act mandate by denying paying for the Plan B and Ella birth control pills, facing finds of up to $1.3 million per day, the Merced Sun-Star reports.

The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals is overseeing the case after the Supreme Court denied a request from Hobby Lobby to stop paying fines while the court case continues, the Merced Sun-Star reports.
