Pinterest: Where domestic divas hang out online

Pinterest

By Suzanne Choney

Pinterest, a slick-looking site with a homespun feel that lets you "pin" your info, links and photos of your favorite stuff ? food, clothing, housework tips ? onto a virtual bulletin board is quickly becoming the go-to social site for women between the ages of 25 and 44.

Started two years ago, Pinterest?has started to gather the kind of momentum that some websites can only dream of: It recently entered the top 10 social networking sites, according to tracking firm?Hitwise, whose December report said Pinterest had 11 million monthly unique visitors.

"Pinterest has built up an impressive following in the stylish scrap-booker set in a short period of time," wrote David Teicher in Ad Age recently. "Marketers and publishers are starting to take notice."

While some might think of it as a Facebook for domestic divas, they'd be wrong. This is strictly about stuff ? stuff that warms the heart and hearth ? with a good dose of down-to-Earth-edness behind it all, but not about friending and people updates.

(You can browse by people, as well as subjects, but to be sure, subjects, ranging from "DIY and crafts" to "pets" to "weddings and events" rule on Pinterest.) The Pottery Barn catalog-like look of the site lends to its appeal.

You can post your own creations, like the malt-ball chocolate cake shown here from user?Sonja, who has her own Urbane Fruits?blog, sharing "the food and recipes that I love," but added it to Pinterest, where, like many popular items, it was "re-pinned" (circulated) around Pinterest.

Those who make a living selling stuff also have a home here, both small scale and increasingly large (Nordstrom among them; the retailer created a Pinterest page last March).

One person who sells made-for-baby chef hats and kerchiefs on similarly spirit-minded?Etsy posted this photo and elicited these kinds of reactions for the photo itself:

This would b a great pic:). Easy props!

Ha I have that same bowl lol not the cutie in it, they are all big now :(

(The seller says the photo is from one of her customers.)

The colorful, hodge-podge of goodies and do-it-yourself projects appeal to the thrifty in many of us these days. For sure the site has appeal to the I-shop-Target-and-the-Nordstrom-half-yearly-sale set, as well as to anybody looking to escape the more serious events of the day.

"Our goal is to connect everyone in the world through the 'things' they find interesting," Pinterest says on its site. "We think that a favorite book, toy, or recipe can reveal a common link between two people. With millions of new pins added every week, Pinterest is connecting people all over the world based on shared tastes and interests."

That's for sure. Hitwise says that from June to December 2011, Pinterest's traffic had grown 40 times over.
