Observatory: ?Lucy? Species Could Climb Trees, Researchers Say

Last year the discovery of a foot bone revealed that, more than three million years ago, the hominid species whose most famous member is known as Lucy probably walked upright.

Zeray Alemseged/Dikika Research Project

The research is based on the analysis of the shoulder bones of "Selam", an Australopithecus afarensis 3-year-old.

Now a new study reveals that the species, Australopithecus afarensis, was also quite apelike, and very capable of climbing trees. The research is based on the analysis of the shoulder bones of Selam, a 3-year-old of the same species.

?The position or orientation of the shoulder joint was very gorillalike,? said Zeresenay Alemseged, a paleoanthropologist at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco and one of the study?s authors.

?We compared it to the primate database,? Dr. Alemseged said. ?This is the earliest, most complete scapula ever analyzed.?

He and his colleague David J. Green, an anatomist at Midwestern University, report their findings in the current issue of the journal Science.

Dr. Alemseged speculates that Lucy, Selam and their kin climbed trees to hide from predators and search for food, and perhaps even to nest.

Exactly how much time they spent in trees is hard to say. Other research has revealed that many traits of the species? hip bone, lower limb and foot are humanlike and well suited for upright walking.

Dr. Alemseged was part of the team that discovered Selam in 2000, in Ethiopia. It took about 10 years to analyze the paper-thin scapula, which was embedded in sandstone, Dr. Alemseged said.

Lucy, a partial skeleton of the species, was discovered in 1974.

In an advance toward analyzing blood and urine instantly at a patient's bedside instead of waiting for results from a central laboratory, scientists are reporting development of a new micropump capable of producing pressures almost 500 times higher than the pressure in a car tire. Described in ACS' journal Analytical Chemistry, the pumps are for futuristic "labs-on-a-chip," which reduce entire laboratories to the size of a postage stamp.

Shaorong Liu and colleagues explain that powerful pumps are critical for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), a mainstay laboratory testing technology used in medical diagnosis, drug screening and numerous other purposes. HPLC can analyze 80 percent of all known chemical compounds. Scientists are trying to miniaturize HPLC for handheld devices, which would eliminate the need to send samples to central labs and wait for the results. One stumbling block, however, is the lack of suitable small, powerful pumps to push samples through HPLC devices.

They describe invention of a device six times more powerful than the best existing pump of this kind. Linked together in series, their electroosmotic pumps can produce more than 17,000 pounds per square inch of pressure. The pumps use electroosmotic flow, in which an electrical current makes charged particles flow through a narrow channel. The new pumps could produce even higher pressures, the scientists report.

Motorcycles at the Audi Museum | Rider Magazine

When German car manufacturer Audi purchased Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati last April, many motorcyclists scratched their head in confusion. Ducatisti wept, concerned that the automotive giant would impose Teutonic rigidity on their beloved, flamboyantly Italian marque.

The hand-wringing wasn?t necessary. Audi doesn?t micromanage Lamborghini, its other high-profile Italian holding. And when Audi CEO Rupert Stadler addressed Ducati?s workforce in July, he made a significant promise: ?Ladies and gentlemen?you have my guarantee: Ducati remains Ducati.?

The Audi Museum is located at the company's headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany.

The Audi Museum is located at the company's headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany.

Recently I traveled to Bilbao, Spain, for the world press launch of the 2013 Ducati Multistrada 1200. Our flight from Los Angeles to Bilbao included a 24-hour layover in Munich, Germany, which gave us an opportunity to drink liters of dunkel and scarf sausages, sauerkraut and pretzels at the Hofbrauhaus during Oktoberfest. But the primary reason for our time in Bavaria was a visit to the Audi Museum at the company?s headquarters in Ingolstadt, about an hour from Munich.

Not being a car guy, I didn?t know much about Audi, and I was completely ignorant of the company?s long history. To my surprise, interspersed among the dozens of automobiles spanning more than 100 years of production history, were numerous motorcycles. And they weren?t there just to appease a small handful of North American moto-journalists. The motorcycles are part of the museum?s permanent collection.

August Horch established his own automobile company, A. Horch & Cie, in 1899. Ten years later, Horch was ousted by the supervisory board, and he founded a separate company called Audi. (Horch means ?hear? in German, and Audi means ?to listen? in Latin.) In the early 1930s, Audi merged with Horch, DKW and Wanderer, forming Auto Union. DKW and Wanderer were two German manufacturers of both automobiles and motorcycles. Thus began the use of the badge showing four interlocking rings?one for each company in the union?that continues to be used today in Audi?s logo.

Motorcycles are mixed in among the historic automobiles.

Motorcycles are mixed in among the historic automobiles.

Due to the upheaval of World War II and the changing landscape of the automobile market in Germany, some Auto Union brands faded away and the company rode a rollercoaster of mergers and acquisitions. Daimler-Benz acquired Auto Union in 1958, and then sold it soon thereafter because it wasn?t profitable. Volkswagen acquired Auto Union in the mid-1960s, and in 1969 the company merged with NSU, another German automobile and motorcycle manufacturer.

During the 1970s and early 1980s, Audi became established as a worldwide brand, while Auto Union and NSU were relegated to the dustbin. Even though motorcycles have never been manufactured under the Audi brand, nor are they likely to be in the future, motorized two-wheelers have been an important part of the company?s varied history. There aren?t yet any Ducatis at the Audi Museum, but they will fit right in!

PFT: Lions trade for Jaguars receiver Thomas

Bills V ChiefsGetty Images

Former Lions and Bills LB Chris Spielman will be profiled on NFL Network?s A Football Life tonight.

The Dolphins are getting big performances from their defensive tackles.

Patriots QB Tom Brady says his offensive line did ?a phenomenal job? protecting him against the Rams.

Although he?s primarily a defensive coach, Rex Ryan may ultimately be judged on how he handles the quarterback situation.

The Ravens can?t afford a letdown this week against the Browns.

Cincinnati LB Vincent Rey says the Bengals were the only team interested in him after he went undrafted following a college career at Duke.

Browns RB Trent Richardson is currently on pace for a 940-yard rookie season.

The Steelers don?t know if they?ll have S Ryan Clark or LB LaMarr Woodley on Sunday against the Giants.

The Texans have a clear path to home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs.

For the Colts? offense, protecting QB Andrew Luck from Dolphins DE Cameron Wake will be a top priority on Sunday.

Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey says he?s not thinking about trades and didn?t even know the trade deadline had been moved from Tuesday to Thursday until reporters told him.

Titans MLB Colin McCarthy is still not back at full speed from a Week One high ankle sprain.

Says Broncos WR Brandon Stokley of QB Peyton Manning, ?Almost every time he plays, he does something you?ll remember. I?ve been saying all along he looks the same to me, and I don?t think there?s any doubt what he brings.?

Chiefs QB Matt Cassel says of playing Thursday night in San Diego, ?We?re familiar with San Diego, and they?re familiar with us. It will be a great atmosphere, it will be a nationally televised game at night, and everyone is excited in this locker room.?

Chargers WR Eddie Royal is hoping to get a bigger role on special teams.

Raiders QB Terrelle Pryor is volunteering his time working with students at a local middle school.

The Cowboys could try to add depth at inside linebacker or receiver before the trade deadline.

The Giants need more of a pass rush from DEs Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora.

The Eagles? average starting field position has been the 24.9-yard line, ranking them 31st in the league.

The Redskins will wear throwback uniforms this Sunday. (And they won?t be anywhere near as ugly as the throwbacks the Redskins saw in Pittsburgh last Sunday.)

The Bears? offense misses WR Johnny Knox, who has been out since suffering a serious back injury last season.

Said Lions CB Jonte Green, a sixth-round rookie who has been forced to start the last two games because of injuries to other cornerbacks, ?We?ve just got to keep playing no matter who?s out there. We lost some guys to injuries, and some guys stepped up.?

Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers sees ?significant improvement? in the team?s pass rush.

Fran Tarkenton has some words of encouragement for Vikings fans.

Falcons coach Mike Smith praised the effort of RB Jacquizz Rodgers, who broke off a big run in addition to playing well in the passing game and on special teams.

Panthers K Justin Medlock, who has a black father and a white mother, says people make an issue of his race: ?I get it all the time. Sometimes on the field you can hear them while I?m warming up. You can hear the wide receivers saying ?Oh! That?s a black kicker.??

The Saints? defense got outsmarted by Broncos QB Peyton Manning.

The Buccaneers are 0-5 all-time in Oakland.

Said Cardinals QB John Skelton of the team having nine rushes for seven yards on Monday night, ?The reason we abandoned the run game was because we couldn?t do it.?

The 49ers are getting a six-day break during their bye week.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says there?s no doubt in anyone?s mind in the Seattle locker room that the team is heading in the right direction.

Internet Marketing Rules Blog: Having An Internet Marketing Plan Of ...

Do you have an internet marketing plan of attack? What does it consist of? Is it something that you follow every week, or only a few days per month? Believe it or not, alot of people don?t want to put in the work necessary to make their online business a success. The companies who do have online business success are the people who go above and beyond to promote their website.

You have to realize that you won?t ?get rich quick? online. Anybody who tells you that you can earn $30,000 within the next 30 days is lying to you. You can?t believe the hype that alot of these products contain. You will find people ?teaching? you how to make $30,000 within the next 30 days, and sell this information in a $19 ebook. These people don?t know what they?re talking about.

It?s up to you to learn how to discern the hype and misleading information, so that you can proceed with implementing strategies that will be more productive for you. I can remember when I first got started online, I bought this $497 product that was supposed to show me how to make $10,000 a month on the internet.

The product was actually good, plus it can with the rights to resell the product also - so I was excited. However when I tried to put the product up online for $397? NOBODY purchased from me. Apparently the charm that I saw in the product wasn?t good enough for others to purchase? especially at $397.

I had wasted thousands of dollars on ads trying to make it work, but nobody would buy whatsoever. Needless to say, I was driven out of business, and had to return to my $6.50 an hour day job. I felt pathetic, but it was a learning experience that I will never forget. I can tell you that for sure.

So what about you? Are you looking to make fast cash online, or do you want to build up your business in a sound, organized way? and get rich SLOW?? Hopefully you do, because all the hype online is ridiculous, and you have to be able to look past it. It has taken me years to do, but I now ?have the vision? lol.

Seriously though, you have to run your online business as if it were an offline business. Market your business hard, do joint ventures, start your own affiliate program, create new products, offer monthly memberships, run ads in highly targeted publications, and etc. This will allow you to get the most out of your online marketing efforts.

You need a plan of attack, and you have to start creating this plan right away. Don?t delay? your competitors are out there right now scooping up customers that could have been your?s. If you need a new website design, consult with a web designer, or visit a forum called the ?Warrior Forum? and ask people there to critique your site and suggest changes.

You can make it online. Stay diligent, and you will see your goals come to life. Trust me on this, I would know.

Good luck with earning the money in your business that you are looking for.
