Using the Olympics to get motivated | NJ.com

Fitness professionals agree that at least 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week is recommended for the average adult. Yet, about two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese because they are not eating properly and not fulfilling an active lifestyle.

The 2012 London Olympic Games can serve as a great motivator. Consider the amount of hours these athletes spend working out each day leading up to Olympic competition:

Gymnasts: 6 hours/day
Volleyball players: 6 hours/day
Swimmers: 5 hours/day
Distance runners: 3 hours/day
Archers: 3 hours/day

Although most USA Olympians do not have typical 9-5 jobs, they serve as great advocates to living fit. Those who go on to full-time professional careers continue to make healthy living a priority by finding a proper work-life balance and recognizing that a small commitment of time everyday can increase their overall quality of life.

A very small percentage of athletes go on to become Olympians, but opportunities for finding fun, recreational activities are available for anyone. Do some research and you will find everything from bootcamp classes to indoor or outdoor volleyball. If you are not into team sports, slip your shoes on and give yourself 30 minutes to walk, run, or bike outdoors and get your 30 minutes in today!
