How To Not Be A Perfect Working Mum - 7 Tips To Get Over Yourself

Shoulders back, head held high, the perfect example of smugness - the working mum who manages to stay in control and on top of everything. An aspirational place to look towards for the mere mortals who can barely remember breakfast before they leave the house in the morning. But wait, how important is friendship to you? Ah, at the hub of the nub we want to be popular as well.

Here are seven tips to ensure that as you aspire to perfection, you won't lose your friends on the way!

1. Bragging is strictly off limits. No one is really that interested in how well your son is doing at school especially if your implicit meaning is that he doing so much better than the other kids in his class and your audience are the mothers collecting at the school gate. Perfection doesn't need a platform, it is held aloft for all to see on its own merit, and to refer to it can only tarnish the effect.

2. Demonstrate flexibility within your routines. Your status as super mum is no doubt due to your impeccable organisation skills and a strict adherence to schedules. Try not to dictate social events and arrangements around your own daily diary; not everyone wants or likes to eat at set times.

3. Be aware of others situations. As a working Mum your free time with the kids is sacred, you work in order to be able to live the lifestyle you choose and this might mean splashing out during your afternoons off and school holidays. Just be aware that not everyone may have the same means to keep up with your jaunts, be sensitive.

4. Share your weaknesses. Some may see you as the ultimate woman, juggling life, kids and a career. This can often make you seem unapproachable and most certainly not someone ever would confide their worries of failure to. Showing chinks in your armour will give others faith that their shortcomings can be overcome and will make you a much rounder person.

5. Smell the flowers. It is all too easy to get caught up in the day to day frenzy that your life as a working mum holds. Your blackberry chirps through toddler groups and library rhyme times indiscriminately. It will all not end if you switch it off once in a while, take a walk, breathe in some air and relax those shoulders.

6. Stop offering advice. Sometimes your friends do not want their problems fixed; they are not talking to you to get a view on how you'd solve the situation. They are looking for empathy; listen, nod and acknowledge.

7. Drop the kids off at school one day in your pyjamas. Your kids will be mortified, that's guaranteed, your friends will be aghast at the sight of you without your hair up and makeup on, but you will be laughing all day at the thought of it, and probably for the months to come!

With these tips in effect, you are sure to be more approachable and relatable to other moms.
