Power surge fuels Ellsworth softball team past John Bapst ? Maine ...

BANGOR ? It?s fairly uncommon to see one home run in a high school softball game, let alone three.

But the Ellsworth Eagles showed off some power Wednesday afternoon, as Ashley Smith hit two homers and Cristin Wright another en route to an 8-1 victory over John Bapst at Union Street Field.

Ellsworth, which entered play holding down the No. 8 spot in the Class B Heal points, improved to 4-6 while John Bapst fell to 2-6.

Smith put coach Rick Roberts? club on the board with a first-inning RBI double to left-center. Wright pounded out a solo home run to left with one out in the third to give Ellsworth a 3-0 advantage.

After Bapst cut it to 3-1 in the home half of the fourth, Smith crushed a 1-0 offering over the center field fence to put the Eagles up 6-1.

Smith wasn?t done, sending a two-run shot over the fence in left-center in the sixth to complete the scoring. She finished 3-for-3 with six RBIs and three runs scored while Wright went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Freshman Megan Hunt earned the win, allowing one run on four hits while striking out four, including the side in the seventh.

Abby Marvin drove in John Bapst?s lone run with a fourth-inning single, and Riley Boyle, Brandi Pierce and Kennedy Gilmore also singled for the Crusaders.
